We arrived in Areqipa at 8am this morning after a 9 hour bus ride from Nazca. The bus was the most comfortable I have ever been on. The seats fully reclined and I had leg room. I managed to sleep all the way (possibly helped by the Peruvian sleeping pill!) and can´t believe it was so pain free!
Arequiba is Lima´s second city after Lima. It is much nicer than Lima and has 2 volcanoes overlooking.. Misti and another I can´t remember the name of! The main square is colonial with of course some beautiful churches (and I´m dreaming of a white Christmas blaring out). We are higher up now... about 2500m I think but I can´t feel the altitide. The weather is gorgeous and for the first time in a few days I am feeling well and able to eat.... fantastic!
After the night bus the group has been given the day to do our own thing... so nice and relaxing. THe Nasca lines took it out of me completely yesterday and it took me all day to recover.
After the lines we got a bus to an ancient cemetery with mummies over 2000 years old. It is close to Nasca but much windier so there were small twisters forming everywhere around us The bones of the mummies are exposed to the elements and are bleached white because of the sun. The last time it rained in Nasca was over 10 years ago!!!! It was HOT.
In the everning we went to a resturant for babyyanca (no idea how to spell this). It is a Peruvian dish cooked underground with hot coals and was delicious!!!!
Tomorrow we´re off to Colca Canyon (one of the deepest in the world at over 1km) and hope to see condors. On thursday we´re flying to Cusco and then it´s on to the Inca Trail......
BTW.. my blog is STA blog of the day, how excting? DO I get some kind of cash prize? I think i deserve one for the amount of pics I´ve just managed to upload!!!!!
Massive cuddles. Is it snowing at home?
