Jo's Big Walkabout!!
Hi Everyone!
I've finally managed to get my blog to work so here is my first entry!! Its the same as the email I sent round tho so its actually from yesterday...... Flight over here was good. It took about 10 and a half hours which is my longest flight I've ever done but went pretty quickly. Managed to watch some good films and have a few free drinks to celebrate going away!!
Got here in the evening on Tuesday and managed to find the hostel pretty easily. Although Katy did nearly get run over about 1 minute after getting off the BART (their equivalent of the tube) which was quite scary!! We went out to have a beer and some food after we dropped our bags off then pretty much crashed in the dorm as we were knackered! We are in a 14 bed mixed dorm which I found quite weird to start with but am getting used to it now! Have met a few nice ppl in our room too which is good.
Have been waking up pretty early in the mornings here due to the time difference so got up at about 7am this morning to write emails!! Think everyone else must hate us getting up early as they all sleep for hours!!
Yesterday morning we got up and decided to go and do some sightseeing. As we are trying to spend as little money as possible and also trying to not get fat we thought we would walk everywhere! Our hostel is quite far out of the city tho and when we got home in the evening we worked out we had walked about 18 miles in total so were pretty tired!! We walked up into town and looked around some of the big shops like Macys etc. Then we walked up Powell St which is one of those really steep streets which the cable car things go up. We didnt go in one but they did look quite fun! Eventually we ended up in a place called Fisherman's wharf which is down by the sea and where all the boats etc come in to. From there we caught a boat over to Alcatraz. We looked around there for a couple of hours. You get to go into the cell blocks and they give you a set of those headphones with a guided tour!! Which I found highly amusing but was actually quite good as they tell you about all the different ppl who were there and the different escapes that happened etc etc. We then got the boat back to san francisco and walked into the city to pick up our bus tickets for Saturday evening when we go to LA on the bus. Was lovely sunny weather all day and not a cloud in the sky i dont think. Its warm when ur sitting in the sun but out of the sun there is a pretty chilly breeze. Being typical English we were hardly wearing any clothes at all where as everyone else had woolly hats and coats on!
In the evening we went out for a cheap chinese again as we had one the night before and it didnt make us ill (I'm not quite sure how as the place looks pretty dodgy! Food tastes good tho)!! Then went to a nearby bar for a couple of drinks. We have managed to find some cheaper bars now, on our first night we paid $6 for a pint which we were horrified at!!!
Having a more relaxed day today, may just got to a park and some cafes I think. Then tomorrow we are going to hire bikes and cycle around the bay and over the golden gate bridge. Anyway, I think thats most of the news for now. Having a wicked time so far and people here are refreshingly friendly here compared to England which makes a nice change!
Ta ta for now xxxxx
