Whitneys on Tour
We arrived here on 28th December after not the most terribly comfortable bus journeys from Bolivia. We were promised a cama bus but that turned out to be bulls**t and it was a cramped horrible old bus instead. It also stopped briefly at probably the grimmest town we've yet seen called Juliaca in Peru. We pity anyone who lives there.
However, Cusco is a different kettle of fish. The town centre (if not the outskirts) are beautiful and full of character. It's obviously kept that way for the many tourists who visit here. Additionally it is packed to the rafters with superb (and cheap) cafe's and restaurants. However, you do get hassled here. You can't walk ten yards in the main square without being acosted by a restaurant hawker or someone trying to sell you something. It's fairly harmless though and amusing sometimes.
We spent our first couple of days here chilling out and visting a few art galleries courtesy of the tourist pass we purchased which gives you access to all manner of things. On New Years Eve we visited the Sacred Valley near Cusco where we toured three mountain villages which included a couple of spectacular Inca ruins in amazing mountain scenery. Sadly though, Jo was ill again with a case of the Delhi Belly which rather hampered her day which also meant she was a non-starter for New Years Eve.
Therefore, rather than stay in Stuart ventured out on his own to bring 2006 in! The city square is a traditional gethering point for the locals and tourists and we were told there was due to be a fireworks display there. This turned out to be true.......sort of. The 'display' seemed to be revellers letting off fireworks completly at random. It was amusing but quite frankly dangerous as there was thousands of people there and a couple of the explosions were rather too close to Stuart for comfort!
After the display Stuart managed to find a half decent club for an hour or so before he realised that was quite enough of being Billy no mates for an evening and went home around 2ish to find Jo had improved somewhat.
Therefore our 4 day Inca trail booked for the 2nd January could still go ahead which we were obviously looking forward too despite it being the rainy season.
