Hi everyone,
We've had a really relaxed time in Byron Bay, getting right into the vibe, but not going as far as going dreadlocked (respective mothers, you will be pleased to know!).
We hit the beach every day we were here, and I've managed to catch up with the other two in the tanning competition...well at least I think so anyway! Byron is a really relaxed and hip kind of place, with loads of beaches, a pretty white lighthouse you can see at one end of the Main Beach, surfing as well as a hippy culture, and loads of boutique shops in town (I succumbed and bought a tshirt today!).
When not sunbathing, Joe and I spent a lot of time in the sea, being pounded by the humungous waves that kept crashing down all around us. We busied ourselves either trying to dive under it, or swim along with it. Jo was much more sensible, and became engrossed in her latest 'Twilight' novel! Yesterday we went on a mini adventure, walking from the Main Beach past Clarke's Beach and The Pass (a renowned surfing spot) and then cutting up on to a trail that wound its way around the headland until it reached mainland Australia's most easterly point. All the way round we had stupendous views, and were able to spot in the crystal clear waters schools of dolphins on two separate occasions. They even jumped out of the water, as they chased the waves...Jo was letting out little squeals of delight! A short walk past the most easterly point, and we were at the base of the lighthouse. We stopped here briefly for icecream and surveyed the stunning sights around us.
Today, our last day in Byron, Joe and I hired a surfboard between us. We quickly decided this was the wrong decision...I couldn't even get the board out past the first few waves without it being flung back in my face! Poor Jo was waiting on the beach to get a photo of us up on the board, but this didn't materialise anytime soon! She got ones of us paddling out instead. I managed to stand once and half stand another time before Joe got hurt when he was taken out by a wave, with the surfboard landing on top of his head and scratching his shoulder. After a picnic lunch on the beach I managed to coax Joe back in and we fared much better. We got up frequently, partly because we pushed each other off, and partly because the waves had subsided a bit by this time.
All in all, we loved it here, and we'll really miss the sand, sea, surf and sun. We're preparing ourselves for our last overnight Greyhound journey, taking us down into the cold depths of Sydney, where we're only expecting it to be around 20 degrees celsius. Poor us!
