Hola from San Sebastian..
Well where do I start. Alarm goes off (still in Barcelona) get our s*** together and make our way to main station... we then line up for a ticket and watch the minutes tick away as we wait and then as our train to San Sebastian departs whilst we stand there thinking crap!!!! What the hell do we do now as it 7:30am and the next train isn't til 3pm.. We throw a few ideas out there bus, fly, car, next train... as we couldn't make any decisions I went in search of bus terminal on my way I see the rent a car places and think.. Well this is surely a sign (prob not but the thought of a road trip was very appealing) I enquire where the guy said its only 120€ what a bargain I thought between 5 of us.. So I round up the troops and it is decided.. Cross Country Road Trip in Spain.. What could go wrong honestly? Hahaha
So we decided Elley was the driver and Shifty was the navigator... we got a GPS however shifty being old school thought he knew better than the tom-tom and used an old fashioned map... mistake number 1! After driving around 20-30 mins through the city we get the dildo (this was the government building from my Barcelona blog) you see the dildo is the opposite direction of where we needed to head.. I take over the tom-tom plug in San Sebastian and get back in the right direction.. On the way Elley mounts a curb.. Fail number 2... However considering all of the one way streets and crazy traffic she did an exceptional job.. So we are about 30 miles from Barcelona when we hit stand still traffic.. Poor Elley and Sarah need to pee and when we see a truck driver getting out of his cabin and having a smoke we start thinking we could be sitting here awhile.. So Sarah in true fashion goes in search of a place to pop a squat.. the side of the freeway goes into a cliff so that was out of the question so she spots a tour bus a few cars up ahead... so she missions it up there and knocks on the door.. Me scusi.. They open the door and she walks in and asks and I quote "does anyone speak Australian" not English apparently it's called Australian now.. what Sarah didn't realise is she jumped on a bus that was a tour company called the fanatics... this is usually just aussies, Americans, poms and kiwis who are loose as... one guy replies with ohhh she didn't just ask if we speak Australian... all flustered Sarah replies with a yes I need to pee I'm about to wet myself... no shame!!!! Turns out they didn't have a toilet on their bus anyway.. After having a bit of a yarn she notices the buses engine revving up.. Yep the traffic is on the move again.. She jumps off the bus and Johnny bolts back to the car where we are waiting in hysterics at the thought of losing Sarah on a tour bus.. however we decided that even if they did take off with her that we would prob see her on the side of the road about 10 mins up the road as they would have got sick of her talking and booted her off... Sarah likes to think we would have run into her in the streets of Pamplona partying with her new friends... I guess which one of these would actually have happened we will never know... hilarious to ponder though!!! Will no doubt be a story we tell for a long time to come.
We take the next exit as we see the golden arches, maccas for all those playing at home and the girls relieve themselves and we have lunch. We hit the road again.. This time shifty as the man behind the wheel.. We find some English (Aussie as Sarah would say) tunes and have a sing along to shiftys horror... shuffling and Alanis morrisette were on the play list..
We see the signs saying San Sebastian and feel extremely relieved.. We make it to san seb about 2 hours after we normally would have if we had made the train but had a hilarious adventure along the way.
We check into our pensione which were luxury and drop the hire car off.. At this stage it's about 5pm and we wander down the beach and have a dip as it is about 30 degrees give or take... San Sebastian is Beautiful but surprisingly full of Aussies... we are everywhere over there! we have dinner and then Keira and I hit the town... we went to a little bar where the first song we hear is midnight oil beds are burning and the whole place is singing along... in true typical fashion we found the Australian bar without even trying!!! We have a few sangrias, dance away and meet a heap of people that are doing the fanatics tour of running with the bulls and that were on the bus Sarah hijacked... the lights come on and we hit the hay.
Next day is spent exploring, working out our train tickets to get to Pamplona and by the beach swimming and baking.. Pure bliss... we do the sunset hike up a mountain for some amazing views of the town and a ruined sunset thanks to clouds. It's an earlyish night (early in the sense that sunset wasn't until 10pm) as we have a 7am bus to be on to Pamplona the next day.. San Sebastian take one... done!!! Sarah and I will be returning on our trip.
