Pai
Sam never made it to Pai but one of our friends said it had been her favourite place so we decided to try it out. The only downside was that to get to Pai the drive is the most ridiculously windy drive so none of us felt particularly great especially since we were all a little hung-over!
We checked into a hostel called Pai Circus School, and it was actually as whacky as it sounds, we arrived to see people having fire throwing lessons! It was such a cool little hostel but very very basic, we were staying in small bamboo cabins and everything was based outside! It reminded me a bit of some of the camps I stayed in when I was in Africa!
The first day we wandered in to the town, it's a very small, very chilled out town and we straight away liked it a lot. At night the street is full with food stalls, there is so so much choice and it was all unbelievably good! I ended the night with a banana Nutella and peanut butter crepe, having been craving chocolate I was in absolute heaven!!! Pai is extremely hot in the day but absolutely freezing at night time.
Our beds were basically outside so to keep warm I slept in leggings, elephants pants, two jumpers, sleeping bag liner and two blankets and was only just warm!
The next day we woke up and wandered around the town, we considered the idea of hiring mopeds, I wasn't sure but dad said him and mum have been on them so we decided to get a lesson on how to drive! It was actually very easy; I think it's more of a case of having to watch out for other drivers than being hard to drive.
We only had the next day in Pai so in the end the girls decided to go on a tour instead just because we thought we would be able to fit in the most sites.
We got picked up at 530 am the next morning to go and see the sun rise on top of a hill, we were tired when we first got in the car however but the time we got out we were buzzing as our driver had the best cd we were all able to sing along to! The sunrise was beautiful and we were all so glad we got up to see it! - However we went back to bed for an hour before starting the tour at 9.
We first went to the big Buddha on the hill- it is a huge white Buddha that your have to climb what felt like a million steps to get up to! You can pretty much see it from anywhere in Pai! Next we went to hot water springs which were amazing! It was like a bath so we spent about an hour relaxing in them! There were lots of different pools and they varied in temperature, the hottest one was about 80 degrees, obviously no one was going in it however some locals were cracking eggs in to it!! The springs was great to do with just the girls- if felt like we were at a spa!
We then went to the Pai canyon! By this point it was about midday and absolutely boiling- we walked around the edge and then Jen found a slope to a bridge view point- we don't think this was a recommended path- it was a steep path and we were skidding all over the place! We were so hot after walking round so luckily the next stop was a strawberry farm and we had the most refreshing strawberry slush drinks!
We asked our guide to take us to the Pai land crack as Emily has heard about it- one family's land has cracked in half; there are 4 different cracks from four different occasions. The cracks are huge! They were so deep and so wide- you could easily fit a lorry or two on it! It is ridiculous to think that that can happen! For a donation we were brought loads of food and fruit! Some were a bit odd but our favourites were the passion fruit and fried banana crisps!
The final stops were a Chinese village which was small but pretty and then a waterfall, we all got in but it was absolutely freezing so quickly got out again!
We were dropped back at our hostel and then quickly had to get ready for our two day journey to Laos!
