Hi kids,
Well we arrived in Jaipur from Agra on the train. Bit of an odd train- people just walking up and down the carriage staring at us and what we would call a transvestite (the man opposite described them as 'middle-men') coming up and trying to talk to us in hindi and the man across saying he was a policeman so they went away.. Apparently kids are kidnapped and castrated and because homosexuality is largely frowed upon here, transvesites and trans-gendered people have managed to create a kind of third sex so theyre not considered men or women, which doesnt seem to offend the majority of people as much. Fascinating (sorry i've got my sociology head on)..
ANYWAY, we arrived in Jaipur and went to a s***ty hostel. The next day we got up and did all the touristy things. The old city is walled and everything is built in 'pink' (ORANGE!!) stone so its quite unique. We saw a nice elephant walking down the street with neon paint all over its face (must be into nu-rave). We had the WORST food yet- 'pasta' cooked so much that it was MUSH in a disgraceful sauce, and colshy ordered a 'bean curry' which was essentially wood and pepper corn. URGH. (it was so expensive too!)
THEN we went to the City Palace which was quite nice. A wee boy did a dance for us ('middle man'!) and colshy got a shot of a sitar. So quite a good day all in all. We then went for dinner which was slightly better than earlier on and colshy had his first beer in weeks!
The next day we got up and got the bus to Puskar (where i'm writing from now). Horray! Its going so so so well just now, we're having a brilliant time thank god!
Anyway, I hope everyones ok. Lots of love, Jenny xxxx
