Arrived safely to San Tiago!
The flight over went much quicker than I expected (probably because I watched Oceans 13 twice) but I was surrounded by what seemed like a million Spanish speaking Chileans and a handful of scared looking backpackers! Managed to hook up with 2 other backpackers in the arrivals hall so we went and found a cheap hostel in the centre of ST and then went and explored! The first thing which struck was how European San Tiago was and the second was that I may just have to brush up on my Spanish!!!!......The 5 or so phrases I learnt in Salou were not going to get me through my time here in Chile!!!!!! Anyway so we went down to ST central and explored its many beautiful churches, cathedrals and plazas.Lots of street theatre, stalls and arts going on. We took a walk up to one of the cathedrals and the view across the city to the Andes mountains was spectacular! Ordered a Coca Cola in a restaurant and they gave me a chicken burger instead -a definite drive now to learn some Spanish!!! That evening we enjoyed some red wine which is extremly cheap and very tasty- costs only about 1 pound a bottle. The local drink here is Pisco sour so may be sampling that to!!!!!-Things are going very well so far!!
Next day we checked out some markets andtook the cable car up to a huge statue of The Virgin Mary on the hill-saw an amazing sunset over the city! Managed to sample a few food delights including a hotdog smothered in guacamole, mayo and chopped tomatoes ( a signature dish ofChile apparently). We also had a drink which contained cold tea, wheat grains and chopped peaches-tasted alot better than its sounds!!! That evening more red wine…Getting a taste for the stuff now!!
Took a22 hour over night bus up to San Pedro in the north…
