Dec 15: This morning we enjoyed another delicious breakfast on the rooftop of our hotel. We have had no issue adjusting to Indian food for breakfast. The hindi version of the X-factor was on tv so we indulged in that for a while as we prepared to step out and walk around. I suggested that we take a tuk tuk so we flagged one down and agreed to stop at a tourist trap shop first so that our driver would get free gas. These shops are usually off the beaten path so they give gas to tuk tuk drivers who bring un-knowing visitors there who spend way more than they should on nik-naks. We played our role and then got dropped off at our intended destination. The disparity in wealth here is as vast as it is visible. You will see a brand new shopping plaza with Western shops and security guards, and across the street you'll see crumbling shack houses and stray dogs and burning piles of garbage. Its a very fascinating situation to witness. The overarching theme that we noticed is the happiness shared amongst the people of this country. Everyone seems genuinley content with what they have; a lesson to be learned by most people in North America. We spent most of the morning and afternoon walking around and looking at many of the shops. We strolled around at a leisurely pace and just took in the sights and sounds of this bustling city. After a nice dinner we called it an early night.
Dec 16: This morning we had breakfast and packed up before heading to the airport to catch our flight to puducherry. This is a coastal town which is an old French colony. We are exited to visit some very old churches and temples (some dating back to the 1500's). We boarded our very small, SpiceJet propeller plane and to our surprise the flight only took 30 minutes. Before we knew it we were at our guesthouse. The owner, Gilbert, took us to our room and we hit the town. There is a nice promenade along the water that we strolled along. There are a lot of Indian tourists here as well as locals; white is still the minority. The coastal area of this town is a lot more laid back than the rest of it. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from. We got some evening drinks at a place where the tables are under bamboo huts. For dinner we thought we'd try out a pizzeria. It was a good choice!
Dec 17: This morning we woke up a little bit groggy. I fell victim to some nasty lil demon bugs at around midnight. I wrapped myself in a sheet for protection but it didnt work. Aaron lay beside me completely unaffected. Eventually I got out of bed and aaron found me in a haze just looking at the wall. The bugs were quite literally driving me mad! He checked me out and found some abnormally large welts on my back. Again, aaron had no bites! Eventually I put on a hoodie, threw my sheet on the ground, and was able to fall asleep. By the morning the welts were gone and I was fine... Im still curious about what was an nibbling on me last night though! Our day took a bad turn as our shockproof camera stopped focussing after it fell out of aarons pocket at lunch. It literally fell 2 feet! This was very upsetting to us both but we jumped on the internet to look for solutions. We are currently dropping and banging it to try to fix it; this was what most forums told us to do. As of now its still broken and im gearing up to send a really well-worded email to Sony. This is not our first issue we've had with them recently. A a side note, lunch was unreal. Our chicken sandwich was marinated in delicious spices and our butter chicken was so flavorful as well. After not finding any help at the local Sony store we accepted our fate and instead searched for a liquor store. We both got a free glass with the purchase of 2 Kingfisher Ultras. Im excited to see how long we'll go before our bags are full of broken glass. The men at the store took our picture and treated us like minor celebrities. It should be noted that we saw dogs having sex in the street. It looked nothing like the 'doggy style' Westerns are used to. Perhaps even the dogs here practice the art of Kama Sutra? We marched back to our guesthouse and enjoyed our beers on the rooftop patio as we took in the scenery below. We made it to the aruvedic massage place and each enjoyed an hour of relaxation. The style of massage is different than any we've had in Thailand or Bali. The man kind of treated us like a hunk of meat that needed to be tendorized. It felt great, and afterwards we both felt absolutely no tension in any muscle of our bodies. We showered up and headed to a rooftop restaurant where we had a delicious chicken curry dish with yummy rice and our go-to dish, paneer butter masala. Its a delicious sauce surrounding chunks of paneer (indian cottage cheese). This cheese is comparable to unripened mozzarella at home. Like Indian bocconcini. Its delicious and rich tasting. Another note about our room. Our private bathroom is indeed private as only we have a key to it, but its located down the hall from our room. Our room does have a shower inside it though, so for the purposes of going 'number one' during the night, we've been making use of our shower drain. All part of the adventure.
