After traveling now for 4 days, I have finally settled in Tam Ky, Vietnam. I'm going to back up a little and tell you about the rest of my weekend.
We finished out the weekend in Hoi An having a nice little breakfast, picking up our clothes, and walking across the Japanese covered bridge to check out more markets. We ventured on less crowded streets and made our way down by the river to check out the fresh food market. Many different smells and interesting food stood out. After Hoi An we headed back to Da Nang and spent some time at the GVN house. Later that night we went out to dinner with all of the volunteers. We ran into a little problem which can be common in Vietnam. The cab driver told us he knew where he was going, but didn't. We ended up getting out of the cab and finding our own way. It was quite fun walking around downtown Da Nang but a little frightening when it was time to cross an intersection. There is only one rule of the road here- GO! You don't stop, you don't yeild to others, you just go. So basically as all the bikes, scooters, and cars are driving and crossing intersections, you just have to walk across the street without hesitation. If you wait for an opening, you'll never cross. If you hesitate, you'll get hit. After realizing a few of the restaurants were closed, we headed toward the river and ate at a hotel.
The next morning all of the new volunteers had orientation. The point was to tell us a little about our placement, expectations, and teaching assignments. We also had some Vietnamese language and culture lessons. I'll write another blog sharing information about the language but it consists of many of the same words said with different tones which have different meanings! After orientation we were driven to Tam Ky (pronounced key).
