Rockin' all over the world
We spent two & a half weeks in Fiji, touring around the main island of Viti Levu with the Fiji Experience. After a relaxed but boring couple of days in Nadi we jumped on the bus and visited our first Fijian beach, after a swim, some volleyball with the local kids & a questionable BBQ lunch, we headed to a local village & then the Sigatoka sand dunes - which me & Jem, claiming because we'd done it before, completely avoided -really they were too scary! We then checked into Mango Bay on the coral coast, and regretably jumped straight into our first Kava ceremony - the custom was explained and we each took it in turns to down a bowl of the murky water - it tastes like soil, & does very little other than give u a monster headache and a numb tongue. Nevertheless, several beers & alot of drunken dancing later it somehow seemed a good idea to drink litres of it, right up to the point of going for a midnight swim in my undies & befriending a 'smooth criminal'!
We decided to spend a couple of days in Mango Bay, so said goodbye to our friends & settled in for some movies & board games (the sun left with them), on our third day we met some new friends and spent the night witnessing limbo, crab racing and getting to know each other using a lime & a stopwatch!
The next day we got back on the bus and headed to the capital of Suva, stopping for a rather terrifying boat ride through the mountains and a spot of river tubing and waterfall swimming. Moving straight on the next day we headed to Raki Raki, stopping for even more Kava en route and a spot of bracelet weaving in the countryside. We also headed down to the river for a billi billi rafting race and some volleyball and then stopped by a village school & met the students, had a tour of their "facilities" and found out about their lifestyle. We pulled into our secluded accomodation (Voli Voli) just in time for sunset & joined some old (& new) friends for a beer....
...our first night involved me winning a limbo competition (i cheated by rolling across the sand) & Jem winning a crab race (there's no skill in that - unlike limbo), drinking MORE kava, playing 'ball games', & dancing round the fire on the beach...
