We spent a few days in Brasov, Transylvania, Romania of Dracula fame. The city has an old town centre which is lovely to walk around and there are a few castles and a palace a short drive from the city. When we first arrived and looked around the city we were blown away by the incredible large, gothic buildings that looked like they were fresh off of a Dracula movie set. We were lucky enough to be invited along with two other travellers to drive to two of the castles which was much nicer than our original plan of trying out the public transport. Unfortunately we managed to go to Peles Palace on the one day that it was closed but it actually turned out for the better because we heard it can get ridiculously crowded and we didn't end up having much time there due to delayed trains so we got to see the palace from the outside and enjoy the gardens with only a few other people scattered around.
Brasov and the other towns in the area have all tried to make "Hollywood" style signs on hilltops which has polarised the locals. We chose to walk up to two of the signs to get a view of the towns from above. The towns are all very interesting to see from above because you can see the old town areas surrounded by the old citadel walls and towers. Further out from the fortified areas you can see the areas that were developed by the Soviets and they look so ugly perched right next to beautiful old buildings. It's a little sad to see the horrible concrete block buildings ruining the otherwise beautiful towns but it also tells a story and is part of the history.
