We found Vientiane to be a bit of a shock after the places we've been to, it's a very sleepy town with almost nothing to see or do besides visiting a night market that sets up along the river. While we were there the temperatures were absolutely stifling so it was very hard to enjoy walking around the town.
We were told the trip to Vientiane was supposed to be only 12 hours from Hanoi, Vietnam, but it took about 20 hours and we were the only suckers to be misinformed. We had to cross the border as soon as the sun came up which involved us trudging along a long, foggy, muddy path with no idea where we were going for about 15 minutes. When we finally got everything sorted with the border crossing we had 5 minutes for "breakfast" and the only shop sold packets of chips and some biscuits. From there we were back on the bus for the better portion of the day. When we finally got there we managed to find the only hostel in town that not only had a broken wi-fi connection but our room had no running water.
Taking all of our "first world problems" into account, Vientiane left us underwhelmed but a lot of it was just bad luck.
