Here our guide told us a story about Buddha which I enjoyed and thus I shall share it here, hopefully I remember it correctly. When the Buddha was young he was the son of a wealthy king. He of course lived a very comfortable life within three beautiful palaces but he never ventured outside of the palaces. Naturally as he got older he became curious about the world and told his father that he wanted to see the outside world. His father gave him permission but secretly arranged it so that when the prince left the palace he was surrounded only by beauty, good looking young people, lush land and happy smily faces. The prince toured this false land with a friend of his and was delighted that the world was so wonderful. On his way back to the palace his friend went behind the kings back and showed the young prince a real town. The prince couldn't get over the sadness and misery, it was his first time coming face to face with poverty and suffering. Before that moment he had never even soon an old man so he asked his friend why the people had white hair, what was the meaning of it!! His friend told him that people grow old and eventually die, he told the prince that he too would eventually cease to exist. Naturally the prince was very upset by what he had seen and heard. He refused to return to the palace and instead lived a life of poverty. For six years he lived under very hard conditions, he hagan to starve himself and one day he went into a river to wash himself but was so weak from hunger that he couldn't get back out. He thought he was going to die when he suddenly heard music in he distance. Three different melodies were being played, one he found to be too high and harsh on the ears another too low and not enjoyable at all. The final melody was somewhere in the middle and was the most beautiful music he had ever heard. The prince summoned the strength to pull himself out of the water with a new outlook on life. He didn't need all the money or to wealth in the world but also it wasn't necessary to deprive himself of every comfort in the world. If he just gave himself enough to be happy the. Life would be perfect. So he returned to his family and started eating again but now instead of many many meals he only ate twice a day. Basically this story tells that to be happy in life you need to aim for the middle. A very nice idea I must say.
