Byron Bay
After leaving Harvey Bay where we spent Christmas with Anne & Poz, we made our way down to the seaside town of Byron Bay. As it was just after Christmas the place was bustling with people and first impressions were that it was a lovely little town.
Our first day we arrived off the Greyhound and the weather was not that great as it was raining (What's it with the weather in Australia??? No one told us they had rain in summer!) and as we arrived early off the bus we were unable to check into our room so decided that we would head to the beach.
The weather cleared up enough for us to take a leisurely stroll down the beach, the Bay gets some awesome waves crashing into the beach and attracts some really good surfers, so we sat watching them for a while. Also there were loads of jelly fish that had been washed up onto shore and you could stand on them and they would pop! They were fairly big b*****s, and we weren't to sure whether they stung or not??? Luckily we didn't get stung!
The following day seeing as it was pretty awful weather we decided last minute to hop on board Jim's alternative tour bus out to Nimbin for the day. For those that don't know, Nimbin is a small town in land that the authorities have seem to forgotten about. The place is like a step back in time to some bygone era of the hippie 70's with people smoking marijuana and selling magic mushrooms and hash cookies!
It's a very random little town full of odd characters. But before we got to the main attraction the tour starts of with Jim driving the old bus whilst telling some funny stories and playing some laid back tunes that go along with the theme of the day!
We wondered around town and no we didn't take part in any illegal activities, although they don't seem to be illegal in Nimbin! We choose to have a stroll about and watch all the strange people about town.
It has to be said though although the residents and people that live here and come here just for the day there is a very laid back attitude and there is a very peaceful vibe in Nimbin and too be honest there not hurting anyone it's all very light hearted.
The last stop of the day was by far the most random! We stopped off in the middle of no where on the way back at a guy called Pauley (Paul) random plot of land (I would say house but there isn't really one there??)
Some crazy bearded old man from the states who has smoked his fair share of drugs in his time I would say! The bus pulled up and this guy Paul was just standing there in just his pants and a shirt just about covering his modesty!
He proceeded to tell us of his beliefs of the universe and how we are all mere creatures on this earth for a short amount of time, and was getting all in depth with his theories and beliefs! This guy was a nutter! He also had spooky dolls and little toy cars dotted about his plot of land.
We popped out for a few drinks when we got back. Byron Bay was busy due to the fact that the Christmas holiday's were upon us and that Byron Bay is popular with Aussies at this time of year.
We really liked Byron Bay and it had a nice buzz about the place, although we wasn't there too long it was a nice place and one we will probably return to at some point.
