With two days to go we had to make up some miles, first traveling up the coast to Oamaru then inland to Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. As soon as we left Dunedin the clouds began to disappear in our rear-view mirror and blue sky appeared in front of us and our spirits rose.We made two brief stops on the way north; first at Moeraki Rocks which are a group of nearly perfectly round rocks that sit on a beach and to me looked like some weird creatures climbing out of the sea.It is odd how interesting rocks can be.We then stopped off at a penguin colony, but essentially found a 'gone fishing' sign and b***** all penguins. We didn't stop at the next colony.
After Oamaru we cut inland towards mount cook and were once again struck by just how much the geography of NZ can change in a small distance. The wet and drab coast first became fertile green rolling pastures, then mountains and lakes in a semi desert environment where the only green bits involved irrigation. The hills were very brown and parched and made a fantastic background to the numerous lakes and rivers made to look almost artificially creamy turquoise by glacial 'rock flour'.
We arrived at the base of Mount Cook on a cold crisp clear afternoon, had a beer then headed to our campsite, celebrating our last night in the campervan by having a rare tiff and refusing to speak to each other for the remainder of the night.
