Back to the civilization and the city of Chengdu. Chengdu is where Panda Bears (which, it turns out, aren’t bears) and Red Pandas (which aren’t pandas) live in captivity. In the wild they live in the forests on the 3000m mountains where we have just been but in Chengdu they live in Chengdu which is a city the size of London, New York and Paris combined. Because of the slight difference in temperature between the in-situ and ex-situ breeding environments, the pandas (with the exception of these young fellas) mostly live in air-conditioned houses which makes visiting a bit disappointing. Oh – and nobody really understands why they don’t breed terribly well. Mmmm.
