Katherine Gorge (20.07.2012): Today we travelled 100km from Gungurul in Kakadu to Pine Creek stopping for only half an hour for a little peek at the old mine shafts and for a refuel. Pine Creek seems to be a town lost in time, it was really quirky. With a full tank of petrol we headed for Katherine 90km along the Stuart Highway from Pine Creek. We stopped in the town to grab a few things we needed and to find an internet café. We finally got phone signals - sorry to anyone who has been unable to get hold of us. It is not so easy to get the internet or signals here.
In the supermarkets they sell so much kangaroo meat including freezers full of kangaroo tales - hair attached. Adam hasn't tried any yet but apparently he will be doing!
From Katherine we travelled a further 30km to Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park). After a brief look in the visitor centre we went for a nice walk along the top of the gorge stopping at some fantastic viewpoints. We resisted the urge to kayak. I do miss cycling though!
We are camping at the park today and have a nice site with a pool AND WIFI. Hence I am able to blog. I have still been writing the blog everyday but cannot post the entries until we get the internet. I forget how used to the internet we are. We have both felt lost not being able to look things up. It makes checking out campsites really tricky.
We have had a dip in the pool and are making the most of having a powered site - it means we can microwave and have the fridge on high. It's much cooler here which is nice and means there are less mosquitoes. We are surrounded by wallabies and roos hopping around the campsite, it's nice to see them alive rather than dead on the roads or in the supermarkets!
