The B. C Lions commissioned 33 artists to design a replique of a Terra cotta Warrior. Actually the discovery of the Warriors in China in 1974 only indicated there are 32. The additional piece of art in Vancouver is the last Empress. The actual warriors never included a female. They will be auctioned in October raising money for a children's charity. Each one represents a story about the city and cultural diversity. This one on Howe Street is called Tlingit Warrior and is by Una-Ann Moyer. We encountered Tlingit history throughout our trip of Alaska and now Canada. The Tlingit people were indigenous to the Pacific Northwest Coast of America. They call themselves Lingit – People of the Tides. They have a heritage that respects family traditions and honours story telling to keep their history alive. Very similiar to Maori culture. The Tlingit society is a matrilineal society that is divided into two kinship groups: The Raven and the Eagle, which in turn are divided into clans and subdivided into tribes. They place value on art, spirituality, kindness and generosity. All good values in our books!
