ok, big big mistake leaving the blog so long, lots happened in rio, yet nothing at all. one of those places where time kinda passed us by and to try and write the little things that made it great now is going to be hard. but....i should finish this since ive kept it up to date from the start.
we got there and checked into the santa clara hotel, the last night iclunded onteh GAP tour from Buenos Aires, and so the last night in a hotel, it was a return to hostels after that!
since we all had a few days in rio, we decided to just ci9ll that afternoon and get our bearings rather than do a specific tour or touris thing. so wejust strolled down to copacabana and got some lunch then had a walk along.
cant deny the beach itslef is stunning, its huge, its wide, the sand is gorgeous, the sea is deep and the waves huge and its busy, all the time. i dont think brazilians work, all they do is tan, play volleye ball or other beach sports, work out, run and then convienently stand in an adonis like pose in unbelievably tight or non existent swimwear when a group of gringos walk past! the worst thing about the tight swimwear fashion is that they dont seem to have worked out that most people look ridiculous, if your fat you shouldnt even bother! but noooo...they do!
we didnt really settle on teh beach, just walked the full lenght really and then down on to iphanema. this is the 'cool' bewach, where all the locas and young people go as copacanpana is just full of touristsand old people and the atmosphere is certainly better on iphanema and far less people selling 'AGUA, ch, CERVEJA, ch, DUEZ REALS ch' and kicking sand on you as they walk past!
went out for our last meal together and then a few of us went out for drinks after saying our goodbyes. started in an irish bar in ipanhem, terrific! and then followed a reccomendation to go to a club called Guapo Loco in Leblon. turned out to be a really good night, pretty messy, but everyone was still with it. the only gringos i there but we got some good attention, a group of girls were teaching us to brazilian funk dance and there was a woman (i think it was a woman) called moon (actually, yeah, maybe a drag) who kept framing my face with her hands and saying 'perfection' haha!
might be a bad thing back home, but go to asia or south america and theyre fascinated by my hair!
checked out of the hotel that morning and made our way to the El misti hostel in Botofogo. i started to feel pretty sick by this point and the taxi driver insised on driving us past allsorts of smelly delights, really not helping! this was followed by a walk down teh road int eh heat with our bags to when a smell hit me just outside the hostel that was it. i was bent in the middle of the road, with my backpack still on barfing everywhere. i then had to walk int he hostel to smiling faces as andrew had gone on his way and told them i wont be long, he just chucking up. perfect! the hostel was reallynice and homely, failry small and had a good communal area and the breakfast was great. we booked straight away to go up and see the christ the redeemer statue. bit of a mistake as it couldnt have being more cludy and we had to wait for a glimpse of it every few seconds. stood right at the base and you cant even see the thigns face. typical. it was so windy up there as well, such a contrast from down in the city. its still impressive though, and was well worth thevisit.
didnt end up going out that night, a bit of recovery was needed an the weather had taken a really bad turn so it got us a bit down. we met two girls in the hostl though that, a it turned out had been taying with two guys wed just done the tour with while they were in BA. so we all got on pretty well and the next few ngiths to meet up were arragned
