We meet holly at the renaissance hotel, another piece of 5 star luxury for myself and Charlie. A quick catch up in the hotel lobby and we head out to china town to get some food and drinks. We end up at our old haunt the reggae bar and with emotions high we have questions that simply cannot be answered. Charlie and I have had a lot of that on this trip. Unanswered questions, profound questions. It seems that the older we are getting and the more we find out, the more we question some of the foundations of our beliefs. We make our way to rooftop bar. With more drinks, old acquaintances, shisha and a McDonald's we go back to the hotel to carry on the party. Parched at 3 in the morning we ring down to room service and are left spitting feathers for hours after, even reducing ourselves to filtering the tap water, frugally sharing it out between the three of us.
We wave Holly off in the lift whilst Charlie and I ponder our next move. We head to the bus station in china town and jump on the next bus. Penang the destination. We arrive late at night not realising Penang is actually on an island (we don't know much) and have to make our way over by ferry. We drop our bags off at the hostel and head out for some world famous street food. Penang is famous not only for its food but for its street art. Georgetown became a world heritage sight in July 2008, made famous by street art and artists. Charlie and I walk the tourist/ treasure hunt trail the following morning whilst deciding what to do from here. After much deliberation we decide to take the ferry to Langkawi. We check in to Gekko hostel. A hostel home to 20 cats and counting. It's my own little paradise. We waste no time in familiarising ourselves with our surroundings. A walk along the beach, a peruse around the shops and some local food, obviously.
The menagerie of exotic birds was our wake up call that morning. We hired a moped and made off on a little adventure around the island. We drove around in search for the perfect beach. We found a few. The black sand beach, a private beach and a jellyfish infested water beach. Until we stumble across paradise. White sand, clear water and a view of the horizon. We settle for a few hours, reading, doing puzzles but mostly burning, before driving back along the coastline, stopping only for some barbecued lamb and a look around an art gallery.
The next day we rent the bike again and cruise around the island. We make it to paradise beach and settle in for a sunset, our last one on Asian soil for now. We reminisce talking highs and lows, friends and foes and our Birkenstock toes. We drive through the night. Every kind of bug hitting me in the face through the jungle clad island. That night we dined at a Chinese restaurant, making the most of great food and cheap prices.
An early start the next morning means that we will arrive in KL a few hours before our flight. We have one last meal in china town and make our way to departures at the airport. This chapter ends and another begins down under.
