KIWIS making their mark in Wales has become a familiar sight over the past couple of seasons.
But now one young Osprey is doing his bit to reverse the trend.
Centre Jonathan Spratt is spending the summer playing for New Zealand provincial side Taranaki and he is loving every minute.
The 22-year-old is also giving a good account of himself on the field and flying the flag for Wales.
He made the starting line-up for the Air New Zealand Cup match against North Harbour last week, playing his part in a 20-13 win.
And he was also involved as a replacement in yesterday's big Ranfurly Shield clash with Auckland at Eden Park, where Taranaki went down to a 22-6 defeat.
Spratt, who captained Wales at the U19 World Cup in South Africa in 2005, is on a five-month rugby sabbatical in New Zealand.
"I love it here. The opportunity to come out here was too good to turn down," he said.
"It's brilliant to get out of Wales and experience somewhere else. The culture here is the same as Wales - both rugby mad.
"I'm loving the lifestyle in Taranaki. Everyone is very welcoming and very open. The rugby is good as well. The game is fast and physical. and there's a lot of class players.
"The guys have been brilliant. We've got a good blend of youth and experience."
Spratt will stay with Taranaki for the duration of the Air New Zealand Cup, which culminates in a knockout section at the end of October.
He will then rejoin the Ospreys, for whom he made nine appearances last season, and he also starred for Premiership champions Neath when not on regional duty.
"I will go from winter here to winter back home," he said. "Back home, we play 30 to 40 games a season, a few more than here, and it's a long haul, but we tend to have slightly bigger squads."
Off the field, the versatile Spratt has a law degree to finish.
"I've done three years at Swansea University, but my degree is on hold because of rugby," he said. "I can't manage both, unfortunately. I need to do one more year to finish the degree."
The studies may just have to remain on hold if the globe-trotting Spratt continues to make a success of his blooming rugby career.
Someone else with high hopes for the future is his former Neath team-mate Gareth Williams, who has joined Guinness Premiership Harlequins on a two-year deal.
The Wales U20 scrum-half will compete with England internationals Danny Care and Andy Gomersall, as well as Samoa's Steve So'oialo for the Quins No 9 jersey.
"I'm delighted to get a chance at the top level," said Williams.
"It's the chance I've wanted and I'm looking forward to it."
Neath-born Williams, 20, has also played for Glamorgan Wanderers, and the Blues and Ospreys academy teams.
