Helen's Travels
After Neighbours night we were due to leave Melbourne really early, but Michelle and Ann-Marie (really cool Irish girls I'd met) and I, ended up getting there 30 minutes late! At least we made it though!
That day, feeling as good as could be expected, we went to Wilsons Promotory National Park and on a 2 hour walk. It was lovely though, the view from the vantage point was stunning and then we walked down to squeaky beach. Yes, it does actually squeak - really cool. From there we went to Foster and to our cabin which was absolutely freezing! We ended up going to bed ridiculously early just so we could be warmish, oh and to catch up on sleep!
The next day feeling a lot better, we went to Terra Unger National Park and for another walk! From there we went to a winery, wine tasting and lunch followed. It seems to be the ongoing trend that I do wine tasting in every country, you never know by the time I get back I may actually know something! From there we carried on to a Health Retreat for the night. It was a good chilled night which was definitely needed after Melbourne. All the food was vegetarian which I thought was really nice but the guys weren't that impressed! We spent the evening around the campfire with a few drinks.
The next day has to be the highlight of this section of the trip, we went to the snowy mountains. I know you're thinking snow in Australia, but yes there is really snow! We went for a walk around the snowy mountains which was just one big snow ball fight, but at the bottom of the valley there was the snowy river that had to be crossed. There were a couple of awkwardly placed stepping stones so a few of us decided it was the best idea to take shoes and socks off and walk across the river. It had to be the worst idea ever in many ways, it was so cold, by the time I'd got to the other side my feet were bright red and nearly all feeling had gone! But on the other hand, at least I didnt fall in, like one or two others did! We continued our walk at the snowy mountains which was a lot of fun with snow balls galore and few people falling over! After crossing the dreaded river again, this time partly attempting the stepping stones we headed back to the hostel for a much needed warm shower!
The final day of the trip saw us head to Canberra. It's the only city in Oz that was actually planned. It's a nice city but very quiet and hard to believe that it's the capital when you compare it to Sydney and Melbourne. While we were in Canberra, for about 3 hours (probably long enough), we went to the war memorial, parliament drive and to the houses of parliament. After going on a tour of parliament for a little while, we went to the roof and had our lunch looking out over Canberra, the old parliament house, parliament drive and the war memorial. After that we were on the road to Sydney.
I spent my final weekend in Australia in Sydney with Ann-Marie and Michelle, and had a couple more good partys including a Brazilian ones with lovely Somberos and also made some more visits to the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and got the ferry to Darling Harbour.
It was a really good last weekend and I was quite gutted to be heading to the colder climates of New Zealand!
