With two days until the 'big off', Howie is finally back from Florida where he has been charming the American olds, dominating the market in extreme breakfast sponging and calling me from his hotel that was so posh there was a little TV in the bathroom mirror so you didn't have to miss a minute of the morning news/24/Seasame Street while you had a shave/brushed your teeth/plucked your nostril hair. It has meant, of course, that all those last-minute things that need to get done have been inevitably left to the last minute. My favourite moment of preparation came just half an hour ago when Howie rang me to ask if he needed to have any vaccinations before we left. Tempted as I was to tell him that he needed a three week course of injections or he would DEFINATELY get rabies, I thought that was perhaps a little bit mean.
I'm not, of course, writing from Ireland but seeing as it is technically the trip starting point it felt right to acknowledge the fact. Howie is currently over there sorting out all the finalities and I'm doing the same over here in England. It's rather tricky getting everything sorted from different countries and we're going to have to synchronise watches in order to check in together tonight, but at the moment it's looking like everything will get done by the time we leave.
Various life-changing desicions are going to have to be made today, namely the one that kept me awake in the early hours this morning, which wasn't 'how am I going to go about getting teaching work when I get there?' or 'do we have all the documentation we need?'; it was 'how am I going to arrange my hand luggage?'. Very important things.
We're both feeling very excited about going now; it's somewhat thrilling to think that this time next week we'll be on a Langkawi beach with a lovely cocktail. Possibly. The more likely eventuality is that I shall be dealing with various digestive issues from the Malaysian food and Howie will be tapping away on his iphone, desperate to reply to that 'very important' email, aka changing his fantasy football team.
This is likely to be the last blog entry written from Europe; hopefully the next one will be written from somewhere extravagantly exotic and will therefore be full of cultural insight. Next stop: Kuala Lumpur.
