Hey
So, not much else happened in Laos. We did try to get to Huay Xai to do the Gibbon experience but when we go there we would of had to wait until the 30th and none of the Team had time, so we jumped countries back to Thailand. ALthough I should probable mention the trip to Huay Xai. We had to basically cram in the back of a pick up truck with 11 people altogether. It had small benches each side and a roof, but the sides slanted in and the roof was very low so you can imagine how comfortable we were - especially the taller lads!! Not only that, but we had to sit in there for 8 hours negotiating a dirt track the whole way. The road is under construction and its just a big mud pit basically. We got stuck a couple of times and had to walk up one hill cos we were too heavy. When we arrived they dropped us off 2km from the town center and demanded more money to take us into town, so we just stayed in the first guesthouse we came to. It was run by japanese who spoke no english, but they were very friendly and gave us lots of food and a bed for the night.
So we have been back in Thailand for about 5 days. Our first time in Chang Mai. We didn't arrive until 11:30pm and the first couple of guesthouses we found were locked up for the night. Luckily we found one down an alley that was still taking guests, but it was a bit of a dump, so we only stayed the one might and moved on. The next day we wandered around the city and went to watch a Thai boxing competition. Was a bit weird as they had boys as young as 8 kicking the crap out of each other. In the morning we left for our trekking, stopping at the local market first for supplies and my new bandana!!! We then had to trek uphill for 3 hours in the middle of the day. It was not a nice experience, dripping with sweat the whole way and hundreds of mozzies too! It was worth it in the end though, the view was amazing from the top. We were in a group of 10 (no Team Laos anymore though, they went trekking the day before us), 4 Israleas, 2 Dutch and 2 Austrians. SO it was a bit difficult being the only English but we coped. Our first night we all crashed out by 9pm after the gruelling climb!! The second day we went to a village and then waterfall. We then had to trek for about 2 hours on torrential rain, along a narrow path, next to a steep drop. Was pretty exciting though. The second night we stayed in a random wooden hut next to the river and this time I got the playing cards out and got 6 of us playing drinking games, so it was a bit more eventful. Today (27th) we had a short trek to the elephant camp, and a trek on the elephants. We then went white water rafting and bamboo rafting before getting lunch and heading back to Chang Mai. Leaving tonight for Bangkok on the overnight train, then to Kanchanaburi (again!!!) and back to Bangkok to fly to the Phillipines on the 3rd Aug. Hope u enjoy the pics, chow for now, Hev x x x x x x
