So sorry to those of you who were trying to follow my blog this summer; the lack of internet in Australia and New Zealand prevented me from doing a continuous update. But nevertheless I will try to pick up where I left off.
The last week of Sydney was so much fun. This trip was really slow when it first started but like all things, once you get to know everyone it becomes more fun. Helle, Nick and I went to see Harry Potter on the opening day at the Imax; so much fun! We also went to the Opera the day before that. On Thursday night we all went to a dance club called “home.” I would say that that night was the best night I had in Australia. Almost all of us were out and just having fun. On Friday I went out with a few of my friends to Manly Beach and on Saturday me and a couple of my friends went to the Olympic parks! So cool! I got to swim in the 2000 Olympic pool! On Sunday we packed up and headed to Cairns. Fun Fact. Sam was almost left in Sydney. There were two buses that morning to take us all to the airport. I hadn’t seen Sam all morning but I was so worried about making sure I had everything that I didn’t really wonder why I hadn’t seen her. Once I got all my stuff down stairs I started to wonder where she was. Still though, I was worried about getting myself situated. Once I was on the bus I started to get worried. I asked around to find out if anyone had seen her that morning. Helle told me she thought she saw her on the other bus. I just said ‘I hope so.’ So we get to the airport and I watch everyone filter off our bus; no Sam. The other bus that was behind us starts to file off. I ask Tatiana, who was on the other bus, if Sam was on that bus and she just looked at me and said “Girl Sam’s not with you?” Now very worried I shook my head ‘no.’ Tatiana said that she was probably at the back of the bus and she just didn’t see her. So we all waited and watched everyone filter off the bus; no sam. Now freaking out I’m trying to think of plans of what to do. I called my parents and asked them to text or call Sam from my phone back home because her number was in that phone. A little after that I realize that I have Sam’s father’s number in my emergency phone from when we were in Cali. I call him and leave a distressed message asking him to call his daughter and wake her up. About 40 minutes later my friend Paul gets a call from Sam saying that her dad’s phone call woke her up and that she is in a Taxi on her way to the airport. So fun times. Almost forgetting Sam in Sydney! Haha.
Anyways, the journey continues. So Cairns was amazing. The first few days we had class so it was kinda a bummer. We had class from 1-5 so we couldn’t really enjoy the nice weather. But on Wednesday we had our big test and then we had the next four days to ourselves. On Thursday Helle, Emily and I went white water rafting….which was SO much fun. I loved it. It was a gorgeous day and we had a really chill guide. It was altogether amazing. On Friday we went to the Great Barrier Reef and went snorkeling. I hated that. The amazing colors and creatures that were there entertained me for about 20 minutes. I also tried scuba diving before I did anything. I was in one of the first groups to go down so when we got to the first reef I went diving right away. I had a panic attack under the water. Yeah. Enough said. So the reef was $165 of a waste of the money and day. Anyways, the next three days after that it was just relaxing. Helle and I would go into town and walk around or just chill out by the pool. It was an excellent way to end the trip.
New Zealand for the first few days seemed like a huge waste. It was our driver’s last tour so by all means my bus was the party bus. It seemed like all we would do was drive for like 3 hours to somewhere in New Zealand just to get to a certain bar and then we would get up the next day and do the same thing. However, once I got to know more people on the bus it got better. Also as we got further on our journey there were more things to do. We went hiking on a glacier when we were in Saint Josef’s; which was really cool. It was pouring when we went but it was still pretty cool. I found out later that the glacier we were on was used in Lord of the Rings! I also got to go bungy jumping when we got to Queenstown! So cool! I did the bridge jump . Queenstown was so amazing. I had so much fun. One of the days Bill and I rented Kayaks and went out on this really pretty lake. It was a gorgeous day and I got good pictures! So overall, New Zealand is pretty amazing; as well as Australia. It rains A LOT in New Zealand but rain cannot hinder how gorgeous the country is. Australia was just amazing. The people I met made it 100% worth while. I know it took pretty much until the 2nd week on Sydney for me to feel that was but nevertheless it was amazing.
