Jonnys Eastern Delights!
And so the first phase of this trip is almost over, and I'm just counting down the hours until I meet Becky - I just can't wait! During the past two weeks I have done a route that would have been totally unthinkable as little as 10 years ago - it has certainly been interesting if not always straightforward!
To be honest, I was just glad to get the hell out of Tirana - it's not one of those places I will be going back to in a hurry! It was good that I met Alex in the afternoon (an opera singer no less!) as we just killed the day together without doing a right lot, but at least I wasn't alone the whole day.
The actual ride to Skope was fine, problem was that through no fault of my own I didn't have a clue where I had been dropped off as a local had just told me. I would find out later that it was in fact none of the 3 alternatives marked on my map - so it wasn't really that suprising that I spent well over an hour wandering around looking lost, trying to get my bearings. I didn't appreciate the irony too much when I finally found the place I was after - only a few minutes walk from where I had started. This was compounded by the absolute a******* on reception who made me wait for over 2 hours while he decided if there was room for me or not, most of which he spent chattin to his mate. His attitude all day was awful, and I ended up getting a not too cheap room to myself since by that time I just wanted to get sorted. The rest of the day was a bit of a doss, the highlight being when I returned to my room in the evening to find possibly my favourite film on the TV - Beverly Hills Cop 2!! So I contented myself with an evening in with a couple of beers laughing my socks off!
Tuesday proved that Macedonia aint a great deal easier than Albania in terms of arranging busses out - you really wouldn't believe what constitutes an international bus station over here! So after literally spending the whole morning walking all over town trying to find the right place, I finally got it sorted throught a travel agency and then spent the afternoon seeing what few sights there are and having a kip in the old fort.
So, a fairly unspectacular couple of days, with just one thing on my mind now - Bex and hopefully a more backpacker friendly country in Bulgaria!
