So Honduras... Expect the unexpected they say! Now we see why!
Wat a place- from a 14 stage zipline 300ft in the air to the "Mecca" of diving- with a cheeky gun point robbery thrown in for good measure!
Copan sits just on the edge of Honduras and Guatemala border and is a chilled out little town home to some pretty spectactular mayan ruins ( so we hear as we opted for the zip line tour instead). 14 slides from the top to bottom of the mountain over valleys and rivers- longest ride was 1km long. Good times!
Next we hit up the bay islands- our luxury little wood cabin on the beach was a little over budget but worth it for shizzle. 2 seconds to the clear carribean waters- where we snorkled to our hearts content. The strong currents made for some entertaining times- I.e almost getting anialated into the coral- hence the suggestions from the dive schools to go out with them... Never mind! Not only did we survive, but swam with many a variety of wikid little fish fellas and amoungst some awsome coral.
Wow- Honduras is amazing- wats all the fuss about!
Back to the mainland and sleep above a bakery for a couple of days whilst descovering that we had gone out at night in some rather shifty neighbourhoods!!! Probably would explain those guys that kept following us...
So our plan was a cheeky ride now from san pedro to lake yojoa, no problem...
Long story short- some punks decided to join us on a chicken bus (who would have known it was payday.... Mental note- stay in on the 15th in Honduras). So these punk a**e b****es decided to whip out "the biggest rocket launchers and Gatling guns I've ever seen ( or handgun if you prefer), and rob everyone on the bus, fortunately I managed to shove the passports and other bits down my shorts ( what a relief to still have the passport....). Anywhos after they got what they wanted they kindly said "good day", that was my translation anyway, and poodled off into the distance.
A couple of wikid days at the lake included a jumping and a climb through a waterfall- amazing, some fishing, boat trip and some home made beer from the hostel ( the guy actually imports the hops from Ipswich- mental).
So on down to the lovely captital of Honduras- teguscigalpa!! Use the term "lovely" very loosely. A nice 4 hour chicken bus ride was just what we wanted - and was positive we were gonna get robbed again as these guys came on, made some woman and daughter move- who turned around and started shouting some Spanish Jubba jabba about her family and danger and not scared... Speak for your self love-I needed new underwear very shortly after... So these gentlemen said they were staying on for the next 3 hours and yet refused to pay the bus fair- then after buying there pop corn- telling them we weren't american and had infact been with family in Mexico- they shook our hands and got straight off!!
So we were feeling lucky now and just wanted to be in Nicaragua by the morning... But fantastically- an even nicer group of gentlemen wanted to steal everything.... Yes- passports, iPod, sunglasses, flight tickets and a cheeky 2000 pounds from my bank... The next few days were great fun- didn't feel edgy at all... Just had to keep returning to the English consulate.... Where the receptionist spoke not a word of Spanish- let alone English. Then given the option of four weeks here or pay a little extra to return to Guatemala we didn't hessitate to cough up the cash. So fisrt class transport it was out of this amazing/beautiful/hell hole.....
