Our group met with another group and we began our tour in La Paz. La Paz is a huge city with so many people getting ready for Christmas. An image of La Paz that will always stay with me is of llama foetus' at the Witches' Market!
After La Paz we headed to Uyuni and spent Christmas on the amazing salt flats. We were in 4x4 for 3 days driving across the most spectacular scenery I have every seen. We spent Christmas day taking silly photos and the cooks even made us kind of roast dinner that we ate of a salt tables! The salt was amazing in itself with the sun glistening off of it but we were also driving past mountains, volcanoes, natural hot springs and red and green lakes full of bright pink flamingoes! We absolutely loved the salt flats and really enjoyed our Christmas there.
After the salt flats we went down to Potosi and visited the silver mines. Climbing through the mines with dynamite exploding was pretty cool, but felt a bit dodgy!
After Potosi we headed to Sucre where we spent New Year's Eve. We went rock climbing during the day then headed to a bar in the evening. A Bolivian tradition for New Year's is, at 12, to put on either red or yellow underwear, depending on whether you want love or money the following year. So, like 14year olds, most of the gap group put their red or yellow underwear on over the top of their clothes...was a good laugh!
After the very cultural experience of New Year's we headed to the airport where we caught our flight to Santa Cruz and crossed the Brazilian border.
