We set off on our second overnight bus journey for Cordoba hopeful of another good trip, unfortunately this was not the case. We had a man in front of us who was trying to gain entry to the Guinness book of records for loudest snorer. In between snorts we could hear a beeping from the bus which was continual from the moment we got on till we ran off the bus. When Helen asked one of the drivers about the noise they said they had no idea but 'it always does it'. I'm not a mechanic but I know when I'm in a car if it beeps then usually something is wrong but hey ho.
We finally got off the bus with bleeding ears and slightly cranky (Helen) and lugged our cases 25 mims to the hostel. As we were so early the room wasn't ready but were told to help ourselves to breakfast. Although we've only been gone to a short time breakfasts have become a bit dull in the hostels as it is just bread products, but we had a special treat in this place as there were eggs!!! We had decided to take the proper travelling route and join a dorm room for a couple of nights, so as you can imagine I was hoping for 2 Swedish blonde ladies but alas we were greeted by a guy from his bed. A bit later after we had showered and woken up the man got up from his bed and was wearing frilly nickers and a vest top - after a few sideways glances Helen and I signalled that this was in fact a lady (Danish not Swedish in case you were wondering).
We spent the day looking for some cultural things to do as we we thought our brains could do with a workout. We found a museum which showcased some people who were kept captive during the dictatorship, but unfortunately everything was in Spanish so after a short while we headed for a beer. Later on we headed back to the hostel as we had signed up for a BBQ and wine night. We grabbed some beers beforehand and chilled out in the lounge with some other people including our room mates before heading onto the terrace. We were greeted by one of the largest BBQs I have ever seen and it was piled high with meat. We tucked into this and the boxes of wine (in large glass bottles to try and look good quality - didn't work). The night went on very late until the wine ran out and Helen and I decided we needed some sleep. It actually rained for a small amount of time during the BBQ which brought back memories of good old England!
The next day we woke with what some people call a hangover, but having never experienced this before we were unsure. We spent the next day viewing the city with our he/she room mate Signe who was very nice. We looked at some impressive architecture and went to a large outdoor market on the lookout for trinkets (not my idea). Later on in the evening we walked past a cathedral where a wedding party were outside having just been married but yet there were another couple being married in there and two more couples in cars waiting in line. I believe this was a mass cost cutting exercise and completely agree with it.
On our final day we left the hostel and stepped out onto the usually packed road and there was not a soul in sight and no shops were open. This was very eerie and was the same everywhere we went, eventually we realised it was Sunday and that maybe everyone was at church or hungover from all the weddings. This threw a spanner in the works as there was nothing to do so we wiled away many hours in the only cafe/bar we could find. We were sat in the main square towards the end of the day when a bit of bird poo landed on my shorts, it came off without too much fuss but whilst this was happening Helen felt something land in her hair so I had a look and the bird had got another bullseye.
All in all Cordoba was fun but not a great deal to do there, our 'party' hostel was fun although less so after a large night and the words "bed bugs" were heard far to often for our liking (vicious rumours we hope). Next we move on to Salta and hope for less poo stories.
