Ok so it's been way too long and I don't actually remember half of the last week, feels like forever ago I was in Laos! I'll split this in two though so it makes a bit more sense, the islands of Laos and the islands of Thailand don't really go together!
So I went on the kayaking tour of the 4000 islands where I discovered that joining the kayaking club in uni does not mean you can kayak. We did it in pairs so I was with Louise and there were about ten other kayaks in the group... aaand we were miles behind them for pretty much the entire day! One time was maybe potentially my fault for trying to take a shortcut and ending up completely wedged on some rocks while everyone else just left us, but I swear there was something wrong with our boat the rest of the time, definitely. It was fun though, we saw lots of river dolphins which are sortof pinkish and look a bit funny, visited the biggest waterfall in SE Asia as well as some smaller ones which were pretty impressive, and perfectly navigated our way through some rapids. Before this I was going to try and kayak from Vang Vieng to Vietienne but couldn't cos there weren't enough people, I now realise that I probably would have died if I had! Probably the most active day of the trip so far, good thing I've been doing nothing productive since then!
So next day I said goodbye to Holly and Brittany and got on a really really long bus to Bangkok with Lousie. It wasn't even a sleeper. Why would they not make it a sleeper! Got to Bangkok and was gonna stay a night there but discovered that full moon was not on the 7th as I thought but on the 5th, so I had to cancel my beautiful room with a double bed and a massive balcony to get back on another non sleeper night bus to get to a boat so I could go to the pre-party on Koh Phangan. Had lunch with Louise and her friend before I left, they're both flight attendants and have made me way more concerned about flying than I was before! Good thing planes fly themselves pretty much. Did a bit of drunken shopping on Kao San road which resulted in 5 tops two dresses and some travel pants, then got on the bus which smelled really bad, was really cold, and had no leg room. So after about 36 hours on a bus I finally got to Koh Phangan.... most effort for a party ever.
I really enjoyed Laos but still don't really feel like I got to know it very well. The locals aren't as approachable as Thailand and Vang Vieng just feels like a really hot and extra drunken version of home. Still, glad I took the detour over there, it's been an interesting one!
