So we made it to Bangkok after getting told we couldnt be seated next to each other on the plane we ended up getting seats together and by the exit- loads of legroom woohoo!
As soon as we touched down in Bangkok i knew that i had obviously researched the weather wrong! i am sure i read that i would be arriving in Bangkok during the Thai acquivalent of winter?! oh how very wrong i was. It is infact one of their hottest months of the year, and oh yes Hayley, the biggest lover of all things hot (haha), was here to stay for at least 3 days, oh dear god! I cannot describe the heat to you, it is literally like stepping OUT into a sauna. My constant sweating can only be compensated for by the fact that it is in some very uncomfortable way a detox program!
We took the skytrain (very nice and airconditioned - London Transport take note!) to the famous MBK shopping centre with its 7 floors of shops and markets - this kept us amused for most of the first night. I even managed to persuade Ben to ride on a tuk tuk home- very exciting and extremely scary! we even managed to squeeze in an ice cream before bedtime.
Next day we decided to pack our bags again and take a taxi to the other side of Bangkok and stay a little closer to the attractions. We stayed in a little guesthouse called New Joes behind the famous backpackers area Khao San road (filmed in 'the beach') and it cost us as little as 3 pounds each a night (with air con ofcourse!). We spent the next day on a tuk tuk visiting 3 buddhist temples that are normally closed to tourists but opened especially for the one day as it was a buddhist festival and all for free. They were amazing to see and as they were all empty when we arrived it made it even more special for us... and the tuk tuk only cost 50 baht- bargain!
We visisted the floating market, just outside of Bangkok, which was alot of fun and a perfect example of how different thai shopping culture is to our own back home! you'l have to check out our pics to understand.
We spent a couple of nights on the Khao San road sampling their fine cocktails and cheap beers (roughly 40 pence a bottle!). we particularly enjoyed their buckets of thai wiskey, red bull and coke! mmmm! And we even made it to a Ping Pong show in Patpong, it is amazing the things people can do when they put their mind to it! haha! It even had a 'very special' show at the end! me being the naive girl that I am didnt quite understand what this was going to be and had to spend the following five minutes hiding her blushes and staring at the ceiling!
Unfortunately amongst all this fun there was a downside. I hate to make out all Thai people are con artists but in our 3 days in the city we have noticed that if they can charge you double or even triple what you should be paying for something they will, that goes for gifts, tuk tuk rides, taxi's,and even trips that you might want to do. We visited a supposedly reputable tourist information company planing on booking a bus ride to Ko Samui, we left with a 2 week holiday to Ko Samui and Koh-Phangan for well over what we should have paid. It was mainly to us being naive and not having the guts to say no but we learnt the hard way- so take note and always think before you buy and try to book accommodation and transport seperately- it works out cheaper.
We are due to leave for Ko Samui (yes we are still miffed off with the thai travel agent)in a couple of hours so I shall be in touch when we arrive and are all nicely settled on the beach! yippee.
