Saturday 7th March - Auckland
Had one last day in auckland after coming back from the bay of islands. We luckily happened to be in auckland on a saturday which is auckland blues rugby day. We picked up some cheap tickets off the internet and headed down for a lads day at the rugby. Me and guy dressed up in what the others felt was a rather gay outfit but i thought was pretty funny. A mixture of crazy rugby shorts, beaters, cowboy hats and sweat bands! Anyways we had a couple of beers and watched the sharks put a few trys past the blues ending in a convincing victory to the sharks. We then went out for a few beers with the rest of the hostel rugby fans in the globe bar under our hostel which turned out to be quite a good evening! We ended up meeting J P Pietersen and Ndungane to players from the sharks side which was pretty sweet!
Sunday 8th March - Mercury Bay
This was the real start to the kiwi experience. We headed out of auckland into proper NZ which is pretty awesome. And down to mercury bay. Me guy, slates and will headed off on a 4 hour kayake trip round the whole of the bay which turned out to be a really good laugh. We went out to all these little islands which look a bit like the ones off thailand and went through caves and stuff for a while. We then headed into the beach where we saw catheral cove which is this massive archway carved out of the headland, pretty massive!!
We then headed over to this little hostel called turtle cove which was quite small and homely, had a big bowl of spag bowl and then headed off to the local spa where they have these hot pools heated from the local geo thermal activity. Me sam, guy and slates chilled there for a hour of two had a few corona's and made full use of the best showers we have had for the last week or so.
Monday 9th March - Rotorua
Arrived just after lunch to a horrible smell. Because rotorua is so geo thermicly active it has a constant stench of sulphur in the air which reallys smells but is meant to be quite good for u!! When straight to this geo thermal park and saw some geezers (water constantly firing out of the ground) which was pretty cool followed by a few other things like a mud pool. Saw a kiwi bird as well! Pretty cute little things.
For the evenings entertainment a few off us heade out to a local mauri village for a bit of culture and food. On the bus on the way there i was made chief of our tribe of 52 people, called the TUI tribe which was pretty cool. This meant that i had to stand up whilst the mauri tribe did the haka and other war dances right in my face! Was pretty crazy! Clubs were flying around and the mauri s with there tattoed faces and being pretty much naked ended up being pretty crazy but i was accepeted as not being an enemy and we were let into their village for some awesome food and a really fun evening! I was then given a present to say thank you for bringing my tribe along which was jokes!! Got a wooded hand carved necklace thing which was really nice of them.
