Hi.
We have finished our small trip of Lao so just a small blog to update you all on our travels in Lao!
Lao is a beautiful country, its very mountainous and the scenery is spectacular. I didnt really know much about Lao until we got here and I think its more scenic than Vietnam.
Vientaine is the capital of Lao, its quite a small city and quiet in the evenings as we think everywhere is Lao has a cerfew as all the bars have to shut and stop playing music at midnight which is a bit annoying. We had to go to Vientaine because thats where our overnight bus from Vietnam went to but we only stayed 1 night as we wanted to get to Vang Vieng and have fun there!
Vang Vieng was so much fun. Its set in the mountains. As we dont have that much time in Lao we decided to go tubing straight away! It was an immense amount of fun. In england it would definatley be banned and health and safety would be having a field day!!! It was ace though and we didnt think about the risks involved as it would have spoiled the fun!!! It had been raining a lot the night before and because its wet season the river was very fast and high....(probably shouldnt be writing this in the blog for mums to read)! The locals throw ropes out for you to grab and pull you into the bars but because the river was quite fast we did sometimes end up missing the ropes and the locals would then jump in and swim after you and pull you in! Every bar had rope swings which were fun and a bit hairy and 1 bar had a mud pit with tug of war (as you can probably see from the photos on facebook I got stuck in and covered in mud). The water was a suspect colour but we are fine and only came away with a few bruises! We went out that night and continued the drinking....lets just say we realised the buckets do very funny things to you! The next day we decided to have an alcohol free day and chill out! All the bars in Vang Vieng play friends and family guy all day everyday!! Its weird that they just continually play those 2 programmes on repeat, I think its become some kind of a tradition there, so we just chilled out and made the most of watching friends nearly all day!!!
We then moved onto Luang Prabang. The journey was about 6 hours from vang vieng and it was beautiful travelling through the mountains the whole way, the road was lined with banana trees and all the mountains are untouched. The views were awesome!!! However because it has been raining a lot at night....this meant that the small mountain roads are not all that safe as we found out....the rain had meant that there were many many landslides along the way and twice we got stuck as they had to clear the road! The locals all came out to help though and pushed the cars through the mud and the women came round with fresh sweet corn straight from the fields, it was kinda chewy compared to sweet corn at home but tasted good! We were glad that we had chosen to travel in a mini bus because if we had been in a coach I dont think we would have made it across! We finally got to Luang Prabang though which is also set in the mountains. We went yesterday to some waterfalls which was good fun and they had a bear rescue centre there so we saw the bears chilling out in their hammock like beds haha!!!! We trekked up the side of the waterfall and then across the top of the water fall, again health and safety would have been having a field day as the only thing between us and the massive water fall was a little wooden fence! After the sweat fest of trekking up the side of the waterfall and down again we all jumped into the waterfall pools at the end, which was very refreshing!!!
I wish we could see more of Lao but I guess we cant see everything. We are heading to Chaing Mai in Thailand tonight. Another overnight bus, a boat across a river and another bus!! Fun times!!!! After Chaing Mai is the thai islands and we cant wait for more beach and party action!!!
I love reading everyones photo comments they are entertaining!!!
