Today we spent much of our time underground. The first stop was Carlsbad Caverns National Park where we went on a 2 miles self-guided tour of the cave. It was absolutely spectacular both in the size of the caverns and the amazing formations that have developed there.
After that we met up with Aaron who works for the BLM, he took us on a tour of a nearby cave. Armed with lights, helmets and knee pads we crawled all over the place. He didn't tell us what went where so we basically just explored. Mike 'discovered' a hidden tunnel that connected two larger caverns and we found lots of dead ends. Exhausted and completely covered in dirt we left the cave and continued our southward drive. We stayed the night in a day-use area (don't tell the BLM!) near a river south of town. The river was damed creating a little pond with a few trees growing around. It was dark and the water seemed stagnant, nonetheless we ditched our clothes and jumped in. It was warm and the stars were out; a refreshing end to the day.
