Day 7 - Hattusa, Turkey to Goreme, Turkey
After a really cold night we had an equally cold breakfast al fresco. Its less than 10 degrees which is a real shock after the heat of previous days.
We start the cultural day with a visit to Hatusas museum. Some really interesting artifacts including my favorite a Hittite smurf. They also had some Sphinx which had been renovated by Germans. They tried to steal one but the Turks got it back quite recently after threatening the Germans with all sorts of handbags at dawn.
We then ride around the City of the Hittites on the bikes which is quite big and derelict. It used to be lost but we found it easy enough - very impressive. Hawk and Warrior succumb to trinket sellers in front of the Kings gate. They got a good deal apparently .........
Start the riding day off with some twisties which leads into a major landscape, long straight roads and full speed curves. Certainly the longest straight road I've ever ridden. It seemed endless and the hills never seemed to get any closer.
For the afternoon its some unpaved roads which actually turn out to be reasonably well paved unfortunately. They serve their purpose though and get us to Goreme where all of the amazing stone caves/houses are located.
Get stopped by the police today for the first time but he soon realises the paper work nightmare and waves us on our way. Not sure why he stopped us in the first place really.
Our first port of call is a site used by ATV's to scare the tourists witless. We give it a quick go but Warrior bottles out on an incline and we nearly head off to find a hotel. I decide we should persevere and head off up towards a slightly raised section over some sandstone. Well the view from there was ridiculous. Warrior must have taken 100 photos at least!
A foursome of Chinese tourists ( 2 boys and 2 girls) then approach saying " that's so cool, so cool" turns out they are talking about the Tiger - get in! They then proceed to ask if they can take photos sat on the bike, but they mean Warriors GS - must remind them of their Dad :-)
We check into the Goreme Inn and get a basement room which is great - we'll pretend its a cave room as that's the speciality of the area. A quick jaunt into town for beer and chips finds us chatting to a tour group from Canada, Ireland and England - we're really making an effort to blend in with the locals.
A quick change to warm up and were out for food at a Cave Restaurant. Really good food cooked for 3 hours in a clay pot in an underground oven. We're given this tip by a set of people on the table opppsite. Turns out they are a guided tour of 3 people, guide and driver travelling round looking at Flora, fauna, birds and beetles! We're instantly at home talking about those subjects if in a slightly tongue in cheek way. They are really interesting and chatty people and they pass the evening deep in conversation with 4 t*** which is right up their street.
To finish off we watch the second half of the Real Madrid v Juventus game. Good game and a good result for Juventus, Gareth Bale fails to deliver to the horror of the Welsh contingent of Hawk and Warrior.
