Day 11 - Canakkale, Turkey to Alexandroupolis, Greece
.
(Guest blogger contribution - Hawk)
Breakfast is taken with 40 women wearing traditional headscarves. They avoid eye contact at all times, despite our best efforts to say good morning.
We head into town and immediately lose Hawk, much to the amusement of the local cafe patrons as we kept missing each other.
Turns out the visitor centre is on the peninsular, so onto the ferry for the twenty minute journey to Gallipoli. Viper stays put as too many people are bashing his wing mirror as they walk past. We're leaving the Asian side now.
We see the Gallipoli cliffs that the Anzac's never had a chance of scaling, all down to poor map drawing by the recon teams.
Off the ferry and head to the visitor centre. This is a very good experience and we spend an hour on the tour of events, going through a series of rooms and getting a very good understanding of how the conflict developed.
Visited the British and Turkish memorials. Millon's of people at one and none at the other, guess which!
We are all very moved, and so pleased to have been there for the 100 anniversary.
On the road again and heading out of Turkey and into Greece. Vipers temp gauge gets to 40 degrees and Warrior starts to wilt as the journey progresses.
Hawk getting worried as his unpaid speeding fine may prevent him from leaving Turkey. No problems as it happens but he is now on the run, without a chance of parole if he gets caught.
The last 7 miles of Turkey is a microcosm of the last 7 days with dogs walking across the motorway, goats grazing the verges, potholes, lumps of tarmac in the road and the odd crazy driver. It's a fond farewell to Turkey. It's been a revelation and totally awesome.
Arrive in Greece and now in a 5 star hotel (yes five star, but we did stay in a 7 star in Serbia, so not the best). In a nice town called Alexandroupolis. Rooms with a sea view no less.
Warrior has to bail out due to a rather annoying nasal leakage but Hawk, Slash and Viper press on for the evening. It's fair to say that we think we've found the best barman ever. He buys us the first round and provides nuts and crisps, then brings a small plate of ham, cheese and bread. We go and have a meal and come back for a nightcap (metaxa) and he provides a bowl of chocolate and more crisp - Carlsberg eat your heart out!!
