I wasn't sure what to expect as Dad and I headed to Luang Prabang for the weekend but this little town sure does have some gems!
Very early Friday morning we made our way to the airport and caught our flight bound for Laos. A short cab ride and we were dumped in the middle of this city which is not too much bigger than Wang! We shared a pizza for breakfast (no judgement!) and hung out until we could check in to our hotel. A blunder of a money swap left us short-changed so we headed back to resolve that after checking in and dumping our bags. We did a lap of town, strolled the Mekong river and sat down for a beer as the sun set! This is the fourth country Dad and I have been to together - really great being able to just hang out!
On Saturday we just spent the day around town. We had croissants and coffee at a French patisserie, did a tour of the royal museum and an awesome BLT for lunch! In the afternoon we climbed Mount Phousi (329 steps, not too bad!) and took in the views from the top over the town. Also the beautiful stupa that sits atop the mountain! We had to swap accomodation because we didn't book far enough ahead so we went and did that then came back to find the Main Street taken over by the night market! We strolled and looked and haggled and got all different kinds of souvenirs! My favourite is my "same same but different" shirt which was $3! A couple of beers and a donut finished off the night and we went back to our hotel to sleep.
Sunday was awesome! We moved accomodation again in the morning and got put on to a bus for a waterfall tour at 1130am. It took about an hour to get out there but gosh it was worth it! The Kuang Si Waterfall is just beautiful - so high and naturally pristine water flowing down! We walked up the trail to the top and took in the views and the cool air! On the way back to our tour bus we walked through an area set up as a bear enclosure which was amazing - not just a token bear like you see at the zoo but a whole complex of them!! That was a highlight for me! We headed back in to town and got dropped off in the centre strip about 5pm. A quick drop back to the hostel and we hit the night market for some dinner and final souvenirs before we head back to KL in the morning. For dinner we had pad thai which was really good but super filling! We sat and had a beer on the rivers edge then emptied our wallets, with my final purchase being a donut - so good!!
Monday morning we were up at 630 to meet our tuk tuk driver who took us out to the airport. A one-and-a-half hour delay for a flight wasn't the greatest in my half-asleep, half-hungry state but what can ya do! We took off just before 11am back to Kuala Lumpur again!
I'm glad I chose to go to Luang Prabang despite the size and it not being the capital, it definitely still had a lot to offer! I enjoyed that we moved accomodation each night because we met more locals this way which was awesome! And the night market was just the greatest thing! Would definitely recommend!
