After an absolutely shocking journey from Hoi An (no particular reason and we've been on worse buses so perhaps we've been spoilt by the luxury in Hoi An!) we arrived in Nha Trang late and hungry. We headed to the nearest bar and managed to land ourselves in the middle of what must be the biggest pick-up joint for "working girls" this side of Bangkok (Graham's also been offered some interesting optional extra's whilst getting his hair cut! - In fact, the barber seemed rather shocked and out of practice. We don't think many people who frequent his establishment actually want a haircut!)!
Sadly, Nha Trang is wet and cloudy at the moment (By the way, although we have a picture very similar to this, this one is not ours! The sky's grey and it's pissing with rain for a start!). But we went to the beach anyway and today we went diving . . . in torrential rain and a howling gale - no real matter, afterall, it doesn't rain underwater! We weren't intending to dive here as we were planning on doing the first half of our PADI when we got to Phu Quoc - it looks like a perfect, idyllic island. We've been really lucky in that this is first time our intended plans have gone seriously awry, but it looks like everyone else in Vietnam wants to go to Phu Quoc too! There are no flights available in or out for another 3 weeks, so we've, very sadly and grumpily (it needed a beer, this decision!), decided to give it a miss rather than go overland. However, it's another location for our return trip to Vietnam next year - this time we'll book flights a little earlier! Anyway - that was how we ended up diving in terrible weather - but the dive was great and only strengthened our determination to head onto another diving paradise later in the trip!
Overall, our impressions of Nha Trang (although they could have been influenced by the weather) are that although it has a great beach, bars and restaurants we could have been in a beach resort many other places in the world and that there is nothing particularly special about it. Given that and the continued thunderstorms that are forecast we're heading off to the mountain town of Dalat tomorrow (cold weather again!) to find ourselves some Easyriders . . . . . !!!
On our final night before leaving (and seeing many more reasons for being glad that we were!) we did manage to find a great little "Bia Hoi" bar. Sat outside on child-size plastic chairs and tables we had pints of San Miguel for a cracking 7.5p! - Not sure if that makes it the best value beer in the world but certainly the best that we have found so far this trip!
