Tuesday, July 29th.
I have been staying in San Jose for a week after flying from Toronto. The weather, as you would expect in California, is amazing! Plus there are palm trees everywhere!
I have been mainly chilling this week, as its hard to get into San Fran from where I am staying with Bob and Birgit, but they have a pool and the scenery is lovely. On Thursday I spent a day in San Fran. I went to the Museum of Modern Art and saw the Frida Kahlo exhibition which was incredible. I went to the Cartoon Museum, and then to another museum which was the site of the first mint in America!
China Town was massive, and I bought lots of rubbish of course to fill my bedroom with. I visited the Golden Gate fortune cookie factory which was hilarious as noone seemed to speak English but you could see them all making the cookies on a little conveyer belt. It was a tiny factory!
I went for Dim Sum, again in a cafe where noone seemed to speak English and they thrust dumplings in front of me! But it was delicious and very cheap. Bob and Birgit have also taken me to some of the little towns around their area, including Los Gatos and Santa Cruz where we went for breakfast on the harbour (it was full of pelicans! Very exciting!) and walked along the beach. The ocean was freezing!
On Friday I cooked dinner for the three of us. Of course I made toad in the hole (representing Yorkshire in California) and on Sunday we went to a Garlic Festival (yes thats right). It was hilarious, I have never had such smelly breath in my life. There was loads of food and loads of fat americans!
Yesterday I travelled to Southern California where I am cuurently staying with some of Toni and Owen's friends in Huntington Beach until Friday. The trip took 10 hours but I saw lots of beautiful scenery and the beaches. Huntington is nicknamed Surf City so as you can imagine its full of surfers! The beach is wonderful and last night we went for some cocktails a a restaurant which had a little bonfire on the side of the beach.
Tuesday 29th July
So basically today was crazy! Me and Christina (the girl who I'm staying with) went to her mums house and just as we were sat on the sofas chatting there was an earthquake! We had to get under the doorframe and everything! Intense! It was the first one in 5 years here and was 5.8 on the richter scale. All life experience. We also bought a kitten home (long story) she is so so cute and tiny. Tonight we're going for 'Taco Tuesday' downtown where they have a little market and stuff. Tomorrow is a beach day :)
Thursday 31st July
Tomorrow I am flying back to San Jose, but I've had a fantastic time here! Yesterday I sunbathed on Newport Beach (where the TV programme 'The OC' is set) and then Christina drove me to Laguna Beach which is where all the rich people live. The beach was lovely and the place was full of art galleries. We drove up to the top of the hill where all the million dollar houses are (very scary steep drive!) and got an amazing view from the top.
Today we drove into LA 'the city of the angels' and went to look at the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard where the Oscars are held. I saw all the stars on the pavement where the famous people have their names and we could see the Hollywood letters from the theatre. It was quite a hazy day so the view wasn't great, but it was pretty weird seeing this stuff you usually see in the movies. They were setting up for Mariah Carey who is going there tonight to sing.
We went to Grauman's Chinese theatre which is where all the stars put their handprints. It was amazing! I put my hands where Marilyn Monroe had been and they were exactly the same size but her feet were tiny! I also saw Johnny Depp's handprints (my fave). It's been fantastic seeing all the sights down here. Next week - San Francisco!
