Hard to believe this is the last day of our Western Australian adventure! What a cram-packed two weeks! It's been fabulous!
Our last brekkie, the trials and tribulations of the final pack, then farewell to our lovely Albany host, Cheryl. Was nice to have a quick re look at this great town - a town very proud of its history and making a mammoth effort to restore , refurbish and rebuild so many of its beautiful buildings, walkways and environs. Would be great to see it again, some time.
Called in to a local farmers market before heading out of town on the Albany highway, making our first stop the Sandalwood Factory....for a few gifts and purchases. Rather nice.
Next stop on our long journey back to Perth was less than 30 minutes, at Mt Barker. A quaint little country town - called in to and had a look around a banksia farm (different!); saw the farmers market, a few wineries including Plantagenet before a coffee and scone ....then on the road again.
Scenery was much more rural - though now grazing and crops. Looked like wheat and canola and often countryside appeared very similar to what we are familiar with in the Riverina.
Next stop for a bite of lunch was Kojonup ( everything is "up" in WA!). Interesting spot - based around the history of nomadic Aborigines attracted to the area and the integration of European settlers. An attraction called Kodja Place houses a gallery, story place and gorgeous rose maze. The pathways of the maze display the story lines of three different women focusing on their courage.
The remainder of the journey to Perth had few highlights, passing through Arthur River, Williams, and Banister before reaching Perth city at about 6pm. Almost felt like being home being back in familiar territory on such a balmy evening. Parked the car in a carpark at Northbridge and wandered around this trendy, bustling, cosmopolitan area of restaurants and bars. Great atmosphere - hard to decide where to eat. Had a drink at the Northbridge Brewing Company - popular micro brewery, then decided on a Chinese restaurant for dinner. Plenty of time to wander back through the cultural area for an ice cream before returning to the car. Wasn't too difficult to find our way to the airport, after filling up with petrol, and to locate the area to drop off the car. Turns out we covered over 2,200 kms - not a bad effort! Time for check-in and a final glass of wine before our departure just before midnight......Farewell WA!
