Skint Ex-Students on Tour
So we've arrived in Cherating an hour north up the east coast by local bus which is an interesting experience to say the least! A shabby old thing with no air conditioning except the open plastic windows rattling as we drove along the street, the bus even stopped for gas. The backs of seats were made from wood and some had fallen off. As we were dropped off on the highway we didnt really know where we were, and luckily an aussie couple were waiting for a bus on the other side of the road. He just pointed towards an ajoining road, we headed over to speak to them. He gave us directions to the little village of Cherating and a place to stay, mini motel chalets - they were right on the beach, and were a good price! Decided to head out and sunbathe on the beach, bad idea - the wind was kicking up so bad! We were covered in sand in minutes, the locals must of thought what a couple of plonkers in their swim gear! So went for a walk along the beach - no one was swimming, ummm strange. As we walked we saw dead jellyfish along the sand - thats why. So no sunbathing and no swimming what can we do?Headed off for something to eat and a drink, and met up with a dutch couple (in their 30's) Stan and Brenda who enlightened us on their previous and current travelling expeditions - they were pro's. Stan told us about his living toilets he had encountered where they poo in troughs which are being eaten by the maggots at the same time - nice - luckily we had already eaten. He also told us about toilets which we high off the ground, and as you did your business through the hole there were pigs waiting for their dinner, and you heard them grunt in excitement! Had our first encounter with widlife in these chalets, cockroaches galore! You can hear them scampering across the floor. Last night they were at least 4 or 5 hunting for food. It makes sleeping pretty hard, especially for Chris as Gem wants to keep the light on all the time, and wakes him up to kill them, or just to let him know that she heard a noise. We've only managed to kill one so far, but have since been told they lay eggs when u kill them, thanks Sam and Mark, wont be doing that again. Not much to do here hence our long essays in our journal. We did go on a boat trip this morning (sunday) which was quite cool. We saw wild monkeys (again) crabs (whoop) and lizards swimming in front of the boat. The purpose of the journey was really to see snakes, but like all tours we go on we just see birds! One more night here (to fight the everlasting battle with the mini beasts) and then off to the Perhentian Islands early tomorrow. About a 6 hour journey, but its supposed to be worth it. Speak soon, love Gem and Chris x x
