We arrived in to the stiffling hot, colonial seaside town of Cartagena to meet up with our travelling bud, Craig, having picked up his lost Iphone from a hostel in Bogota (yes, this is the same guy that lost his passport in Boliva). The town itself is beautiful with colorful colonial buildings and an exciting latino/carribean atmosphere. The old town is sourrounded by a massive concrete fort, from the years when pirates were a threat, allowing you to walk the perimeters with the city on one side and the ocean on the other. Our reunion with Craig lead to quite a few beverages being consumed on our first night and I awoke with a dry mouth, banging headache and covered head to toe in sweat. Being hungover in the midday heat of the carrabean without aircon is not enjoyable!!
On our third night we decided to head out to a nearby island- playa blanca. After being taken for a ride by some pushy agents at the dock trying to sell us a tour we didn´t want, we arrived to this little pearl of a carribean getaway. The island is basic and beautiful, holding on tight to its traditional carribean ways of life. Along the shore there are African locals selling coco locos (rum in a coconut), pina coladas and jewellry while fisherman sail across the clear blue waters in their dug out canoes. There are only a few worn down restaurants and beach huts in town and as the generators whirl into action providing electricity for the island, after the hoards of daytime boat tours leave, it is perfect for sitting on the sand with a beer watching the sun set. It is everything I imagined a carribean hideaway would be!!
