In North island the land is very dry and looks barren in places, lots of irrigation taking place but they appear to need rain . Cars and trucks are bigger and the whole area is more affluent. Sharp contrast to the South Island .

Woke late, it was so quiet, birds coming right up to our feet, they have little fear of humans. Left at 10am and drove north on SH 2 aiming for Hastings. Weather just right for travelling clear and bright. Down through the valleys came to the famous Hawkes Bay wine region. Stop for the night at Dannevirke, originally founded by Scandinavians who cleared the area and settled in the 1800's . Found a very quiet campsite surrounded by trees and birdsong . Perfect.

Decided to stop at Greytown and went round the old cobblestone museum. Well maintained and very interesting, temperatures were rising and on impulse we headed inland to see Stone henge. Unfortunately it was closed, so instead of going back on ourselves we took the "scenic route" all of the family will know what I mean !!! Ended up off roading it for 33 Kms a very long way. Visited Lower Hutt on the SH2 for a repair to our electrics, met a nice couple from North Island who just travel around in their camper and fund it by renting out their home in Kirikiri. On then to Te MARUA reservoir which feeds all of Wellington.
