And i feel fine... :)
Indeed it is the end of the world. It feels like it, smells like it and looks like it. The next time somebody tells me that he's stuck at the end of the world I won't believe him unless he's in Ushuaia. But first things first...
I was incredibly lucky to catch a flight during high season (Stupid me - I didn´t book a flight in advance) and managed to catch a relatively cheap flight (270$ in comparison to the 500-700$ flights at that time) from BA to Ushuaia. We stopped at El Calafate which turned out as a wonderful thing. I´ve never seen a more beautiful view from an airplane window.
Green-turquize water, snowy mountains and cloudy skies. It was breathtaking... I couldn´t help it - I had to take photos even though I hate photographs from airplanes.
Ushuaia itself is a beautiful small city from which a lot of cruises go to Antarctica. Unfortunately these cruises cost 3500$ for a week, which is a BIT too expensive for me so I skipped them. Luckily - there are other things to do in the city area (and not just stamping your passport with a stamp that says ¨The southest city in the world¨, which I did of course...).
First of all - I met Israelis to travel with (for the first time on my trip). We went to the famous national park and hiked there for a day. The weather was cold but not too cold, so we had a wonderful time there. The view is incredible and this city is just the tip of southern Argentina...
After the park we looked for a place to party and found one pub... It was more than I expected, so no disappointment there ;)
On the next day we went to an amazing hiking tour at Laguna Esmeralda. It was so much fun! Like good israelies - we went to the free entry area instead of paying 10 pesos for the formal entry and a map... Luckily we didn´t get lost there ;D
The trail began in a dense forest that had so many dead trees in it. It seems like the cold weather and strong winds kill alot of trees. Some of them were torn from their roots while others had broken branches. The hiking was amazing and had a sinister view in some areas.
Other parts of the trail included beautiful light blue river that flowed from the snowy mountains, a swamp area where we almost sank down to our knees (some of us did ;)) and then some climbing up towards the icy mountains.
The climb ended in the most amazing view - A green-blue lagoon surrounded by snowy mountainds and green trees. The weather was incredible so we slept there for an hour in the sun :D
On our last day in Ushuaia we decided to go up to the mirador and take a look and the entire city and bay area. We climbed up the near mountain (Yes, it was cold) and finished our climb at a great spot with a beautiful view on the entire city and the water surrounding it. They do have a wonderful rich natural environment.
We finished by trying the famous fish here - Merloza Negra. This fish apparently can only be found in the southern hemisphere and only near the soutern parts of South America and Austalia. It swims very deep in the ocean (50m-3500m) and it´s impossible to catch it with a net or a fishing rod... So they use cages - like traps, they lower them to a depth of hundreds of meters and catch those beasts.
It´s an expensive fish but the tastiest i´ve ever tried. I had it with king crab sauce, so I managed to taste 2 expensive local cuisines in one dish :)
Now off to Punto Arenas (Chile) where we can play with penguins and buy cheap hiking gear for Torres del Paine park!
Vamos...
Gilad.
