George's World Travels
Hey,
Aren't I doing well today, 2 postcards in one day! The reason? Abissmal weather! We weer supposed to go on a boat trip around Phi Phi Dom (where we're staying-the main island) and Phi Phi Lay (the smaller island, still mostly untouched-includes Maya Bay where the film the Beach was filmed, and monkey island close by where wild monkeys roam the shores being cheeky and fun). This and a whole lot more was supposed to be rounded off today with a view of the sunset over one of the bays this evening. Sadly it has rained all morning, then became very windy to the extent that the sailing company deemed it cancelled.
Hopefully we will see the beautiful spots tomorrow morning on a private mini boat organised by the company we booked through as have already booked accommodation on Krabi (mainland) for tomorrow night, and last ferry leaves at 2pm, well beofre the sunset! seems pretty good deal though as theyare transfering the ticket, eventhough the second one (what we will do tomorow) is more expensive. Lets all pray for another gorgeous sunny day like yesterday, or like every day in England at the moment!
Ko Phi Phi (dom) is lovely. Although very touristy and with far from perfect sea by the main beach (due to litter) it's beauty still shines out brightly. The coves and beaches are gorgeous, and really do like like the postcard pictures. i don't think words can do it justice and so I will let my photos speak for themselves (when I can upload them).
It was another long travelling day top arrive on this side of the country, however, and this is at the point where my last postcard ended.
We left Ko Samui at 9am and arrived at Krabi at about 7pm i think. The day consisted of jeeps, ferry, bus, mini bus, bus and jeep.
The ferry...well that was a story in itself. Oh dear. Well, all started out great, there was beautiful dazzling sun beating down (had been quite rare over last few days) so Nicki and I were very pleasantly suprised to find an upper deck on the ferry, where we could sunbathe. All was going well, with spirits soaring at the prospect of our tans, when a slightly suspicious Thai guy arrived on the very much deserted scene of the upper deck. While we sat and quickly reduced the amount of skin on show, he wondered towards us and hovered in the corner nearest us smoking. This although not great was bearable. I was not going to be moved from my sunning spot by some pervy guy. However, soon another appeared and as the minutes dragged on edged his way closer and closer to us, form the other side. This in effect had us almost trapped.
Starting to feel bit sick now as we kept getting stares from
both men, we made a hasty dash for the stairs. in my racing thoughts I was preparing for one of the guys to block us or hit us. Fortunately we made our escape unscathed but feeling considerably shaken up. Something seriously hadn't been right up there. Once downstairs we also came to relaise how vunerable we really had been as there was not one else up there and no one would have been able to hear us call out if something had happened given the distance and noise of the engine.
Once downstairs we looked around to discover almost all passengers on the boat were middle aged Thai men, most of which stared at us. we were also followed around the boat by one of the guys form the top deck for the remainder of the crossing. Finally we found a spot in an air-conditioned cabin, in view (almost) to the Western family who were also travelling to Krabi, incase things got out of hand. To pass the time we played Uno. This also warranted the attention of many of the male passengers, and much to our suprise a group of about 6 men conviened around us watching us play.
This was actually a blessing as the guys were pretty sweet and just wanted to figure out the rules of this foreign game. While we taught them, they took our minds off the guy behind us who was following us around and also acted as a protection of sorts, even if just psychological-to any problems we may encounter from other passengers. The games were a little surreal but funny and lighthearted.
Once off the ferry we could finally relax and board the bus to Krabi. Through the trip it was interesting to observe the buses passengers, such a mix and most predominantly Thai, which as not scary staring men was great. Loads of school children travelling home with mates-the uniforms here are very smart, and in sharp contrast to the living conditions we passed en route.
Finally we arrived in Karbi, and about 30 mins after that to our accommodation. Exhausted and being driven made my mosquito bites, which were growing rapidly across my legs, we had a small tuna pizza dinner and went to bed. The room, although not appreciated immediately on arrival was very sweetly assembled, with pretty elphant decorated cloth set on the bed and little golden bags ecah on our pillows as a welcome gift, containing local shells. thought I should mention that point as is often the case that the small things make the biggest difference.
So, the following morning we were bright eyed and bushy tailed awaiting pick up at reception to head over to Ko Phi Phi by jeep and ferry. The jeep once reaching its last pick up spoty was very literally bursting at the seams. Once at the beach we all were split into groups to board small wooden speedboats to travel to the ferry, which was waiting for us in the deeper waters of the bay. Have some pics of the boats wizzing passed us and the viwes of the islands dotted aorund us. Again very picturesque. Once safely upon the ferry we rooted out our sunbathing spot and remained there throughout. It was absolutely gorgeous weather yesterday, as I have already mentioned so was sheer bliss to sunbathe comfortably under the 'pure' sun, as I call it, amongst others doing the same. We saw loads of massive jellyfish on our way over, looking very much as pixar had portrayed in Finding Nemo, where they were all clumped together in lines. Sadly attempts at photos of this was fruitless given the boat's speed.
Our lodgings on Ko Phi Phi are umm...ok! They are fine to sleep in and take a quick shower so thats cool. We do have a TV, which we have discovered airs the Disney channel. How do we know this you ask? Well we spent the last hour before falling asleep last night avidly watching Winnie the Pooh: the Hephelump movie. Or whatever its called. Was quite raptured at points. Oh dear. Ah well our other channel, which has had far more use is CNN. A tad more respectable I guess. I feel thus it is counterbalanced.
Oh, so yeh, through our rain and wind filled day we stumbled upon a french cafe which shows FRIENDS episodes throughout the day! If you know of Nicki and my addiction to the sitcom you will realise what a joy this discovery was. Almost like it was meant for us. Karma continues to come to us. Whenever something goes badly or we are very low through long days of travelling, life gives us a boost like this.
A little observation I have made on this island is that there are a hell of a lot of rather old and overweight American men walking about with lovely Thai women. I think the mail order bride craze shows itself most around here. Our suspicions were confirmed when we read the website a similar profiled male American was browsing: www.mailorderbrides.com.
Oh another thing. On the main beach of the island, as we suned ourselves yesterday and enjoyed the absence of rain this afternoon, lounging in deck chairs, the same Thai women patrols the beach front calling out: 'You hoooo' to everyone, to grab people's attention to her portable stall on jam and chocolate dounuts and variations of pasties. I really like her. Always very jolly with her calls.
Wow, I think that makes me up to date with entries. Crikey. Theres always a first for everything. I guess this can be taken as the silver lining to our dark rain clouds of today.
