Hello from Ko Samui!
We arrived here 3 days ago after a killer journey down here. We caught the sleeper train from Chiang Mai back to Bangkok, which didn't go as smoothly as the journey up. The journey took 3 hours 20 minutes longer and both Gavin and I didn't feel the best (we think we ate something dodgy!). We both got well aquainted with the toilet and unfortunatly for any poor soul doing track maintenance around the Chiang Mai area it all gets dropped onto the track! Ooops! We did however meet a really friendly thai professor who teaches english at a university in Chiang Mai and we happily chatted to her for the last hour.
At Bangkok, it was a quick bite to eat, then back on the train for another 8 hours to Surat Thani. This is the mainland stop for ferrys to the islands. When we arrived we were very tired, very very hungry and we couldn't face anymore traveling so we found a hostel in Surat and then went to find food!
The next day we were up early to catch a bus and then a ferry to Ko Samui. It took about 4 hours in total. We'd already decided to go to Lamai beach, which is the next beach down from the main beach, Chaweng. We found ourselves a very cute bungalow/hut right on the beach.
So for the last few days, we have been chilling, relaxing, sunbathing and getting burnt. It's been fab! We also hired a motorbike to see more of the island and excellent way to get around here. We stopped off at Chaweng beach for some sunbathing and mango! The beach has softer sand and clearer waters, but alot more hawkers trying to sell you stuff. We then got back on the bike and went up to see the big buddha, which was big! We also managed to see a local waterfall. As we were walking back got caught in a monsoon down pour and we got absolutly drenched!
On the way back to the hut we also stopped at some of the islands famous granite rock formations which the locals find amusing. We didn't understand what was so funny though, we were told they looked like something but we just didn't get it! We took some photos so maybe you can help us out? (We'll be posting our photo's in the next couple of days).
We're thinking of heading across to the west coast tomorrow to visit some more islands and perhaps do some scuba diving.
Hope your all keeping well, thanks for the messages, it's really great to hear from you.
Take care.
Lots of Love
Helen and Gavin x
