Here is a random and short entry on various places and things we did in the north!
Ate lots of Bengali Sweets. Just quietly they are awesome!!!!!!!! Some of them have this foil on top of them. Apparently it is silver and it is actually good for you in small quantities... (there lies the problem)...
We chilled at Varanassi while the Dalachat festival was on (Milk gets poured into the Ganges on sunrise). However there was no relaxing into the peace and tranquility of a sunrise over the Ganges as an integral part of the festival was fireworks which went off almost continually, I guess a benefit is that it kept us all awake! In true Indian festival style there were just so many people lining the banks of the ganges, women in their beautiful colourful saris, men in their lungis and people in all states of half dress having their sacred morning dunk in the ganges… We also saw some classic sights, including a ‘pollution control’ boat and a guy washing clothes about 5m away from one of the cremation ghats (part of the river bank) where the ashes get dumped in the river...
We did a few overnight train trips where we got acquainted with the train toilets. These toilets are actually high tech terrain monitors as they allow you to see straight down to the tracks. Danielle also proved her friendship a thousand times over by cleaning up frey’s leaking spew bag – what a champ! (dam Delhi belly)...
We spent Danielle’s birthday at the Nico park bowling alley... kat and frey were very enthusiastic about their air hockey (the puck was flying everywhere) and despite it being her birthday no-one was letting Danielle win at air hockey or pool (however she did make a come back at the bowling)... The scoring computer had a vendetta against Kat and despite her numerous high scores the computer refused to give her spares or strikes! Georgie made us bowl in silly styles (frey was definitely better at these than her normal ‘attempts’).
A few random sights in Kolkata a) the old school Museum where all the exhibits were in the dusty glass cases with the yellowing tags. So many random exhibits too; minority cultures, paintings, auyervedic herbs, stuffed walruses etc etc etc and b) the Missionaries of Charity – mother Theresa’s tomb. c) the markets!
Crazy strict security checks at the airport when we flew to Chennai (Mega bonus points to Kat and Georgie who braved it again to go in search for food for our hungry belly’s!).
