Today was fairly uneventful even though we deviated from our original route. We decided to head down the Columbia Valley to the Crowsnest Highway so we could avoid the snowy forecast around Calgary. So here we are in the Cranbrook Super 8, wondering what kind of weather that tomorrow will bring.
We started the day off by visiting a German bakery that we located last night when we went to the marina - Mum had seen it before on one of her previous trips to Salmon Arm. We picked up some scones, though we were both disappointed with the selection of baked goods - maybe it was because it was so early in the morning. We finally got on the road around ten and headed east to Revelstoke. We got there around 11:30 and parked at Woodenhead Park to do some exploring.
After wandering over to Woodenhead to read up on the first road warning in BC, we walked along the Columbia to a single-lane bridge. Not only was the vehicle area a single lane but so was the pedestrian walkway, which proved interesting when we encounted a double-wide stroller. Deciding against crossing the whole bridge, we turned around midspan after I gave up trying to get pictures of the river looking north - too many wires. When we headed back to the car we noticed a "new" sign on a pole next to a traffic light. This was for the single-lane bridge that was wide enough that you couldn't see the other side. I shudder to think what it was like crossing the bridge before the light was put in. (Note: after close inspection of a photo of it, it appears to refer to a change of maximum weight, not the aforemention light.) Once we made it back to the car, we headed back to the highway via Downtown Revelstoke as a left turn to get back to the bypass was next to impossible. Eventually we made it back to the Trans Canada and continued east to Golden for lunch.
We got to Golden around 3 PM - we were now in Mountain Time. We pulled off the road near our exit and had lunch. We had planned to eat in the parking lot of the Golden Rim, but it appeared to be gone. After a quick picnic lunch in the car I took a couple of pictures of our 'view' and we headed south through Downtown Golden.
The drive was fairly uneventful until Mum asked how our gas was doing. I knew I should have gassed up in Golden - totally slipped my mind. Then we got stuck in construction. We waited there for over ten minutes before we were able to proceed...slowly. We made it to a gas station in Athalmer, near Invermere, and filled up. Ninety minutes later, through showers and generally miserable weather, we made it to Cranbrook.
After checking in we headed out for dinner - we were both hungry as it was seven by the time we arrived at the motel. We ended up going to ABC Country Restaurant - turns out it the original one in the chain. What a disappointment!!! I had the chicken quesadilla and brought most of it with me for tomorrow's lunch. Mum finished her salad but was equally unimpressed. The service was subpar and they don't even carry ginger ale. I think I can scratch ABC of our 'to eat at' list.
By the looks of the weather report I think we made a good decision coming south. They are calling for light snow over the pass tomorrow but it's a lot better than the several inches forecasted for the foothils near Calgary.
Oh I almost forgot, I left Pooh in the hotel in Salmon Arm - Francis is getting them to send it to Dad COD via Greyhound - I hate to think how much that will set me back, but I can't abandon him. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
