Today was a great cycling day! Sunny, warm, gentler terrain. Have I said that before? We left Hicks Bay around 8 am hoping to get most of the riding done before it got too hot. It never did get hot, probably because we were hugging the coast most of the time and the wind and water kept temperatures cooler. Perfect riding conditions. What else can I say about this day? Mary was unfortunate enough to be the first one to get a flat tire on this trip but fortunate that it happened on our lunch break with the van and the big pump available, as well as many helping hands. After a delightful lunch on the beach we rode off only to find a little cafe not more than 300 meters down the road. Jennie and I stopped for a quick ice cream cone before pedaling on.
The afternoon went quickly, the headwind was getting stronger but I was feeling stronger also. In no time we reached our destination at Maraehako Bay. A most unusual and unique backpackers hostel. It felt like we were the Swiss family Robinson living in a tree house. See photos. A few people
Tried their hands at kayaking around the bay but the water looked to choppy for me, who has very little kayak experience. Those who did attempt stated that it was hard work fighting the wind and waves and didn't stay out long. Jennie and Terri cooked a delicious meal with apple crisp for dessert. Tomorrow is our turn to cook and neither Mary nor I have any ideas on what we should make! Mac and cheese? My brain stops there. I will fill you in our creative endeavors once we know what that is.
We sleep to the sound of the ocean waves once again. The beach is right at our doorstep. Goodnight.
